If your 'Church' tells you how long your talks have to be at a funeral and what you must talk about...YOU are part of a cult....not a religion. If a 'Church' draws up the boundary lines and DEMANDS that you ONLY go to church in THOSE ward boundaries...YOU are part of a cult, not a religion. If a 'Church' assigns people to 'minister' to certain people (aka 'being friends') and then as soon as the ward boundaires are changed you never ever hear from those 'ministering' people again, you are part of a cult, not a religion. When a church DICTATES all the rest, YOU are part of a cult, not a religion! I know all of you already know all of this.....It's just amazing how much POWER that The Cult of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints wields!!!

If they dictate your underwear, you are in a cult.

Oh boy...trigger!! Back in 1978, I was living in the Bay Area and my DH had been called as the bishop. We were both in our 20's. The yellow pages of the phone book actually had the Bishop's home phone number! One day, I got a phone call from a man looking for the bishop. He said he had chased some missionaries off his porch and felt bad about it. I asked him where he lived. Turns out, it was not in our ward boundary and I said I could try to get in touch with the bishop of that other ward. That set him off! He started on a rant about how we wouldn't talk to him because he lived in the wrong part of town. As the conversation continued, I determined that he was suicidal and it scared me! He was a Vietnam Vet with PTSD. I was able to convince him to let me put him in touch with my cousin's husband who had also served in Viet Nam. But I will NEVER forget how ashamed I was about using ward boundaries as an excuse. Yes, cult.

If they dictate how many ear piercings you can have or if you can have them, you’re in a CULT
If they dictate what color of shirt you wear to church, you’re in a CULT
If they ban you from speshul meetings because of what’s between your legs, you are in a CULT.

If your church dictates that you only study and research from sources approved by them you are in a gosh dang cult.

"In the world, but not of the world..."

This is what we said back in the day!

Doesn't that sound less culty than reality provides?

Hey, we're all evolving!

Isn't it weird that what is so apparent from the perspective of 'common sense' is so totally invisible to TBMs?

The Kinderhook plates come to mind. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, the church held out hope that these were legit until what... 1970 or so?

Same story with the BoA, of course.

And they still can't let that one go!

But they are de-emphasizing it as much as they can. I wonder how long before they produce a Tri with just the BoM, the D&C, and the Bible. The excuse would be something like "those are the three most relevant to our lives."

I wonder... is there some semi-official, somewhat hidden directive to the upper-echelon leaders not to quote from the BoA?

(supposing, of course that there' something worthwhile there....)
