Apparently no aspect of Mormonism is safe from revision any more. One of the most important defining features of LDS theology- that we can become equals with God- has been repudiated. My question is, why?

The church used to be vibrant and proactive. Now it is changing every day in response to criticism. But there has always been criticism. So here's my question: which group of critics is the church most sensitive to? Who are they trying to please? Do they simply want to become Southern Baptists? They certainly have no interest in adjusting to conform with the more liberal/progressive elements in society. Or am I mistaken?

Best guess?
They do not know.
They do feel the hand of death closing, resulting in panic.
Hence, erratic extreme control inputs.

It's the driver suddenly on black ice in a skidding panic.

They're in "coffin corner"
- go faster get Mach tuck, slower get aerodynamic stall.
Either hazards loss of the aircraft.

There is only one word that I can think of that adequately describes the situation. That word is
P A N I C !!!!!!!!!!!

They actually never repudiated that doctrine. Although GBH tried to two step around it,they never officially dropped it.

"They can keep no secrets, nor forestall the spread of inconvenient facts.

"Only 'excuses' retain the needed vitality to feign control of their route and knowledge of a destination, both of which will require additional, and more inventive excuses in order to explain their drunkard's walk into the sunset."

--Judic West, Archduke of Mym, referring to Free Love, but now equally applicable to mormonism
