I was hopping around social media and someone commented on ETB's relationship with the John Birch society. ON person, in response, stated that he was NOT a member "technically' but that he donated and supported the group.

Was he a "member?"

HH =)

"Although [Ezra Taft] Benson was never a member of record, his wife Flora and sons Reed and Mark all joined the Birch Society."

Quinn's source was Byron Cannon Anderson, an associate of Reed Benson.

Many thanks! I wonder why he wouldn't take the step to put his name on the membership roles (but his wife and children did)???

The church president (David McKay, IIRC) ordered him not to.

Benson pushed a BYU Religion Dept. master's thesis/book by Ernest Lynn Balmforth, ROCK ' REALITY, in 1970-71 that was a virtual clone of Bob Jones University professor Frank Garlock's THE BIG BEAT, A ROCK BLAST book and lecture album. Benson extensively referenced Richard Nibley's (Hugh Nibley's brother) letter from Snow College in Benson's SATAN'S THRUST 1971 anti-rock screed which was also sourced from Bob Jones University and John Birch Society writings.

Balmforth's BYU thesis/book references David A. Noebel as an expert on rock 'n roll.

Noebel's February, 1965, book about Beatle communist brainwashing, Joan Baez taking over the U.S. government crooning "Kumbaya", John Lennon using the "Spear of Destiny" to overthrow the government (per Lynn Bryson's WINNING THE TESTIMONY anti-rock tape series), and riotous teenage cannibalism from Beatlemania.

No, ETB, was not a JBS member and he also declined an offer by JBS founder Robert Welch to become a JBS National Council member but Benson did praise Welch and the JBS publicly and in private correspondence AND he recommended Welch's "private letter" about Eisenhower entitled "The Politician" )

Interesting comment by ETB regarding President Dwight D. Eisenhower which was made during speech by Benson at UPI Editors and Publishers Eastern Division Conference in Washington DC on 9/8/60.

“I’ve come to know him rather intimately and it’s my hope and prayer that in all the days to come this country will be fortunate enough to have in the White House a man of the caliber and the character of Dwight D. Eisenhower.”

Benson was going to run for Vice President on the George Wallace ticket. David O McKay said "OK - but resign your calling first"
, basically "not as long as you are a GA".

Most inspired thing McKay did.
