I was just watching some news footage on You Tube, and I really feel for everyone (human and non-human alike) who has been--who IS--part of this now.

I look back at some of our Southern California earthquakes (Northridge in 1994 comes particularly to mind), and even though many of us in southern California were directly affected in very bad ways, what is happening now in the U.S. southern states seems and looks SO much worse.

It took us a long time to recover, and it is going to take a very long time for those affected by Hurricane Ida to recover, especially since, in large part, they don't have anywhere near the resources we had to deal with the aftermath.

Right now, I (probably most all of us in southern California) just feel so helpless while all this destruction of lives and countryside is going on.

When you've been there before, you can really empathize.

My NOLA niece assures me that she and her family are safely sheltered. I sincerely hope she is right about that.

Looks like New Orleans will be spared (as long as Ida keeps moving) Houma and Thibodeaux, not so much. I've lived in both areas (CA- was in Ventura when the quake hit). My buddy lived in Northridge, off Parthenia, near Reseda Blvd. (where that 3 story apartment went to 2 stories). His pool cracked and his chimney fell apart. I'd rather live where hurricanes happen, than big earthquakes. You get plenty of advanced warning for hurricanes, to pack up and leave. Earthquakes, no warning.

I think I remember this! (I had forgotten, but I have some dim memories of that happening--it was pretty big news at the time.)

I fully understand the logic, but I love this Valley SO MUCH, and I feel SO fortunate to be able to live here! I've lived other places (I lived "over the mountain" for two or three years, plus I've lived in a few other states for periods of time, usually when I was on location), and bottom line: I just love this Valley!

Even with the earthquakes.

Thanks heavens for an infrastructure bill. Perhaps they can move into the 21st Century and transmit electrical power by other means than 19th Century wooden poles and wires. 3 to 4 weeks without electrical power with intense heat and humidity will be brutal.

I was checking out at Costco when the Loma Prieta eatrhquake hit.
I shot full pallets off from the stacks and scattered the goods all over the place.

That was in Cali, wasn't it? Where were you living/visiting?

Don't answer if it's too personal a question.

I don't know what this means.

Is there a typo in the first word?

Tornados are touching down in central Maryland and doing some damage. We're also getting an impressive amount of rain today.

Thanks, Tevai! Luckily, school districts released early today so that we could get home safely, and it's a good thing, too. There is a fair amount of damage in these parts, but thankfully, not in my neighborhood.
