The thing that makes the LDS church unique in many ways is its believe in on-going revelation. That essentially means that any living prophet can overturn a past prophet.

All you need to do is to simply say that god reveals truth to men as they can handle it. Brigham was racist... because he wasn't open to God's truth about the equality of man. Joseph was a horndog, due to his fallen human nature and could not understand god's full truth on treating women like human beings.

If they really wanted to the LDS church could say, LGBTQ people are perfectly acceptable and should be embraced into God's family. There is always a revelation for what you want since the LDS's primary source of truth is direct inspiration from God. They aren't really tied down to what is in scripture.

Just thinking...

Except the church is led by men who couldn't change if their lives depended on it. The corporate bylaws guarantee that the main decider will always be a cryptkeeper dude.

This is what you'd see if the two old guys from "Trading Places" ran a church.

        I love this analysis!

    I bet they're willing to share Jamie Lee . . .

Then they have to explain why they all went along with it for so long and why they also "couldn't handle it" with subsequent prophets. They'd have to explain that the prophet who came up with Proclamation of the Family wasn't ready to hear God either.

The whole problem would cast doubt that the prophets are able to accept God's truth over their own views ever.

So, they are in a pickle. They can't and won't apologize for or repudiate all the harmful discriminatory crap they taught. Instead, they depend on people simply brushing it aside over time like other religions do.

The pride the church takes in being ghawd's true church, with a leader who has ghawd on speed-dial, is coming around to bite them in the ass.

My two penneth they're considering it but the cost benefit analysis isn't decisive yet.

The older diehard more Conservative members need to be appeased. They're forming the leadership and generally have better jobs more tithing etc.

Naturally the cost of this is younger more progressive tolerant members are leaving in droves. Costing them tithing and future leadership etc.

So far they've resisted anything more than window dressing. Things like merging high priests and elders quorum to plug the leadership gap are stop gaps.

My guess would be the diehards will get old and drop out in 20 years or so and the Church will have to act or they'll be unable to fill the leadership positions to maintain the structure.

That and society is moving ever towards more equality that may also tip the Church's hand.

Agree. Over time the oldies will die off and the church will adapt to survive.

The problem is, of course, that God's unchanging beliefs just happen to coincide with a bunch old Utah patriarchs who, and not the other way around.

But like any classic cult, the patriarchs want you to believe the exact opposite, and change things under pressure, by telling you God has shown them "further light and knowledge."

The church already teaches a version of this.

It is not the leaders not being open to change but the members.

In the 60s the church taught that when Moses destroyed the tablets that God wrote with his own finger he destroyed the "higher" law. God then replaced the tablets with a "lesser" law and removed the higher priesthood and ordinances from the earth.
Making the Aaronic priesthood the only one accessible go tje people.

So all the church has to say is the members (not the leaders) ars to blame and as the members progress so does gods instructions.

So really its your fault, your parents, kids and grandparents fault.

The only thing is TSCC DOESN'T TALK TO GOD - or, doesn't listen-anyway - just like it doesn't TALK to the members, or doesn't listen-anyway. It's bent on its own rigidity and coarseness. On its own perversion of the Lord's law and the Lord's work, and lost on the Lord's people.

Change looks easy to those not encircled by the chains of Hell. Church leaders are completely invested in the scam, being led down the garden path until they are where GBH was. Chemo at 97 isn't going to make those chains go away. I wish Ghostrider could ride into the COB and give them all the penance stare.

The church really is ran by a committee. I’m sure the Quorum of the Twelve knock things around and I hear they are notorious for not agreeing with each other. Uchtdorf probably would be all for a more progressive church but good luck getting Bednar, Holland and Oaks to go along with him.

The prophet has the final say but these are old men with not many years left. They probably put it on the back burner so it’s the next prophet’s problem. The can get’s kicked down the road some more.

I would offer the Gerontocracy this from one of their own since I heard from the pulpit the dangers of not being humble:

Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

Apparently the "Ancient of Ways" know what to avoid in order to keep wisdom at bay. However, they seem to be blind to the fact that their arrogance and pride is leaving them more and more disgraced in the eyes of decent people everywhere.

But they are fearful of losing their BIG time donors.

The church has made some changes in their policies/doctrines.

Maybe they can concentrate on fund raiser and grifter skills.

Could doesn't imply can. LDS Inc. is a huge corporation. Maybe not too big to fail but too big to change too much.
