A post on Reddit claimed to list the 'weirdest' city/town names in each of the 50 states.

https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/qqjlng/the_weirdest_town_names_in_all_50_states/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

If you look, you'll see that for Utah they picked "Nibley". Having recently traveled twice to and from Orem from L.A. along I-15, I very much dispute their selection.

What are your top three weird Utah city/town names?

My two favorites are Paragonah and Kolob. Cuz if you contract Kolob, you have to take Paragonah to cure it.

The first time I heard "Moab" I thought it was a weird name. Now I'm used to it.

Panguitch. Hands down. Nibley is not odd at all given so many others to pick from.

Tooele. Outsiders butcher it

Oquirrh Mountains. Ditto, and even locals can't spell it.

Levan, town in the center of the state. "Navel" spelled backwards.

Farr West. "Far" was taken?

Yost.

Aragonite, just down the road from Clive. Both on I-80 on the way to Wendover.

Modena, near Beryl.

Veyo.

Hurricane, pronounced Her'kin.

Panguich.

Koosharem, pronounced Koo-sher'em

Neola.

When I was working based out of St. George periodically, I used to ruminate as to why

Hurricane must be pronounced Her-kin (I remember it as (Herri—kin)

I landed upon my own story that works well for me. At one time the wife of the Dear Leader in the Area needed something to rhyme in song or poem with La Verkin and what was the understandably named mouth-of-the-canyon town of Hurricane became Her-kin, rhymes with La Verkin.

Mystery solved. At least for me.

In addition to the above

Mexican Hat

Elmo

Iosepa ( a Hawaiian name in the middle of the desert)

Tabiona

Pickelville = before it merged with Garden City

Hideout

Peoa (residents known as peons?)

If you don't know about mormonism:

Nephi

Lehi

Moroni

For Washington it has to be Humptulips

For Arizona - Why

For California - Plaster City

Oregon has a lot - in addition to Boring, there is Drain, Zigzag, Yamhill, Yachats, Tillamook

The story they tell of why Why is Why: the settlement sprang up at the Y-shaped junction of highways 85 and 86. Before it was an official town it was called "the place at the Y" or just "the Y." They wanted to officially name the town "Y" but the post office said a name had to have at least three letters. So "Why" was a compromise.

On the other side of the coin, Randolph!

.. Rich County, Utah.

My favorite could be Iosepa. (Joseph, ha)

Adam-ondi-Ahman, Missouri gets the top US vote.

Closest thing to any town named Mormon in Utah though is stupid 'Moroni' and isnt it too bad that Kolob hasn't a town and a bar?
That would be precious.

Weird thing is, if you became an outlaw you lost your surname town handed out, much the same as stealing your wifey.

That's almost a bit similar to an old Clint Eastwood Rawhide film clip happening to maybe mention The Avenging Angles, during some mainstreet town hanging in some nearly unknown Wild West town.

Served to the masses and into the books as if so very (wink wink nod nod) deserving.

These towns aren't located in Utah, but whenever we've driven past them on our way to or from California, they sound stranger each time.

Pahrump, Nevada: It sounds like "harumph".

Halloran Springs, CA: Sounds like someone shouting: "I found water"!

Radio evangelist, self-proclaimed doctor (he wasn't), self-proclaimed Methodist minister, snake oil salesman and real estate promoter Curtis Howe Springer "made up the name Zzyzx and gave it to the area in 1944, claiming it to be the last word in the English language." He built a spa, had a mineral water bottling operation, and sold plots for a promised resort community. "In 1969, the American Medical Association labeled him the "King of Quacks". In the early 1970s, the federal government discovered that Springer held no legal rights to the land where Zzyzx stood; consequently, he was evicted from the space and briefly imprisoned."

I have to vote for Ibapah. When my son was little, he decided to make a phone call. He punched in 12345678, and voila, someone answered. It was a nice lady in Ibapah. When i got the phone bill, I called it to see who it was. The lady said she got lots of calls from little kids doing exactly what my son had done. She remembered talking to my son even.

Right next to the rhyming Hurricane. Wikipedia notes that La Verkin may be a corruption of "la virgen" which would be appropriate given that it's on the Virgin River and near the town of Virgin.

Wikipedia also notes that a transcription error for "beaver skin" is another possibility.

Anyway, still weird imho.

I once had two brothers and their cousin as roommates at BYU. They both came from a well-known family dairy business in Vernal, and were as piously bizarre as a person could be. Just them telling fond stories of their families made me never want to go to Vernal. So I vowed to never go there--which would be hard, anyway, since I have no idea where it is.

"Vernal" comes from Greek or Latin (don't remember which) and means "relating to spring," as in "vernal equinox."

Heber (City)

Must be said with the local accent.

BYU friend and I would meet up in Utah for 4-5 round a day golf outings and we loved courses along Hwy 40 I think around Park City. Beautiful course near Midway Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Paired up with some nice locals in jean shorts and their tip was the greens run towards Heber.

Running golf and other things joke for years—delightful.

Made it back that way recently Heber has pretty much doubled in population, The Homestead looks run down, and Park City has a bright shiny new hospital and Leftist political messages on Main St.

Utah is changing a lot.
