Complacency?
This would account for the lack of interest in seeking out the truth about the religion

Really? When you've been indoctrinated to accept that what you believe is the truest truth and it is "kicking against the pricks" to question it and it is apostacy to attempt to doubt it how motivated do you think Mormons are going to be to test their truths? Huh?
