Salt Lake is teetering on the edge of disappearing, St George & other locations are praying for 'moisture', planning to steal water from neighbors;

Water Rights attorneys are working overtime, desperate for qualified candidates to handle increasing litigation...

Utah ski operators & would-be employees are in a near-panic mode,

Last year's ski tourists are making other plans;

snow shovels & ice-melt salts are sitting idle in stores & distribution centers (formerly 'warehouses', btw).

Just 40 years ago GSL was about to swamp I-80 and Saltair. The south marina had to raise the perimeter walls. Now the marina is essentially closed to boating, and it is a very long hike from Saltair to the water.

October was unusually wet this year, but then we had one of the driest November's ever. The Mirror Lake highway through the Uintah's is still open. I have never heard of it being open into December. It usually closes around Nov 10, give or take a week. It will probably close with the snow predicted for tomorrow.

If I owned a ski resort, I'd be looking to diversify.

I took my dogs for a walk at noon and I have on a hoodie. I got too hot. The dogs were thirsty. Usually by now I'm lucky to get them out for a walk because of ice. Seems funny to have my window open in my room right now as I'm too warm while working.

I don't even know what time it is. I just know it is far too warm for December.

My mother died 13 years ago on December 3rd and we were going to have a graveside service as that is all she wanted, but it was snowing on the day of her burial and we had it in the funeral home. I have an old friend who died last Monday and her funeral is tomorrow. Still shocked it is December. I haven't even pulled my fake tree out of its box yet.

Because of JIT we no longer have warehouses.

I studied logistics in college, I recall seeing a scholarly article telling the pros & cons of JIT, but I haven't seen it lately.


It's very challenging for a business to account for the costs of stock-outs bc they don't appear on the P&L or balance sheet; (witness all the auto manufacturers unable to sell vehicles bc of unavailability of parts including computer chips...) also, smaller, more frequent deliveries create traffic & environmental problems not experienced beforehand.

example is Amazon with delivering packages of individual items: the costs of the shipping & packaging are astronomical compared to a shopper going to a store where the shopper pays for the trip, use of cardboard in lower


Manufacturers are used to processing goods in batches so that the costs of re-setting machines & employees adapting to changes in procedures isn't a + either.


JIT may have once been a good idea, but sorting & storage - distribution costs are backing up in the system.

Winter has visited here too. COLD! -7F tonight with wind chill of -25F. Wish I was under a palm tree somewhere warm.
