To me it's an oxymoron.

There are some who play the role of Mormon maverick probably in order to rationalize/justify their cowardice.

You can be a Mormon and also cool is the message they broadcast to the world.

Yet it never works.

Doesn't stop many from trying though.

the Context is that Mormon leaders have turned intimidation into a finely-tuned system of coercion and family (tribal)members are in on the deal, with varying degrees of complicity.

A lot of NOMs are mavericks.

Of course, most of the thoughtful and principled ones eventually find that the church drives them out. So I'd say "maverick" status is usually a way station on the road to ex-Mormondom.

I think the key word here is "principled," in other words, people with integrity who do the right thing even at great personal cost.

There must be. I have a book called "Mormon Mavericks." I'll find it and let you know who is in it.

If you are a MM and you end up getting ex'd, consider it a higher form of priesthood.

Personally, I feel the term “Mormon Maverick” is nothing more than putting lipstick on a pig.

Why?

If you are a Mormon and present yourself as a maverick, your moral courage, and personal integrity are both highly suspect.
