Let us look at it analytically It is proposed by Joe Jr. that a bright light shined down upn him. This is consistent with virtually every report of alien contact via UFO's This whole thing can get very complicated. I personally give credence to the concept of the arrival of ancient aliens on this planet. So was joe jr hallucinating or did he actually have contact with some sort of alien? An extraterrestrial contact could have been the start of his imaginary trips through history. It is entirely possible that s a reslt of such an encounter his very active creative mind could have started his journey into the unknown and fantasy oriented world that consumed him
He was neither hallucinating, nor did he meet an extraterrestrial. He made the whole thing up ten years after the fact, because he needed a story to explain the sect he stumbled into forming.
Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation that covers all the available evidence. There is zero actual evidence that he saw a bright light, therefor that does not need to be explained. "He made it up" is perfectly consistent with all available evidence.
Rusty's bright light is easy to explain - a triple A battery in his pen.

I like that! Dave-the-Atheist has competition here.
Thank yew. I always try to follow the Scooby-Doo school of metaphysics. Whenever something spooky or mysterious happens, it always turns out to be the janitor in a mask, or something like that.
Applies to much of Mormon lore - BoM, First Vision, Second Anointing, secret handshakes, polygamy, magic underwear, Three Nephites, the Dream Mine, the One Mighty and Strong.
Joseph ate some mushrooms he found in the woods. Had a hallucination. Sobered up and was inspired to sell gibberish to suckers which he based his lifetime career on.
