When I was younger, in my 20's and 30's I was a choir director and I was good at it.
The ward choir once even did a fund raiser concert for the ward building fund.
We performed top flight classical music appropriate for sacrament meetings and enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done.
Then came Gordon Hinckley and correlation. Everything changed
There are no more real choirs. Since the time of Gordon Hinckley and correlation everything is under stricy unreasonable control.
There is only bow down and obey. It causes the members to become disenchanted with the whole operation to subsequently opt out.And the people in power are blind to this!!!

According to wikipedia, Priesthood Correlation Program began in 1908. It sounds like it mostly dealt with lesson manuals. In my own mind, it really got rolling in the late 1960s, under the direction of H B Lee, who was not yet in the First Presidency. This caused some friction between Lee and D O McKay/FP.

When Correlation took over RS and put it under the Q12 (it was originally an independent organization with its own dues, magazine, and even owned its own HQ building across Main Street from Temple Square), there were a lot of seriously POed women in the organization.

Correlation was firmly in place and was an official department in the Church Office Building by 1972. This predates Hinckley by quite a bit, but I am sure the control exerted by Correlation ratcheted up over the years.
