My husband’s younger daughter wants to send us a box. I suggested she send stuff that is popular in Utah, since I have never been there. She is stumped on what to send besides sugar.

I have heard of fry sauce being a popular Utah thing. What else? Besides Jello, of course….

She's a TBM and never been to Meca? The shame of it all

Seriously? Idaho Spud candy bars. I freaking love those, and have never seen them for sale outside of UT/ID.

While they can be ordered directly online (and I've done that too), I don't necessarily want to buy an entire 24-count box. On the rare occasions I'm in Utah, I always get around 8-10.

I'm not a Utahn myself, as you know, so I only found:

Fernwood Mint Sandwiches
Sweet's Candies
Some Dude's Fry Sauce
Prime Toffee

(EDIT: non-Utah items removed)

I should mention, we have access to the military commissary, so we can get generic American junk food and other stuff. I am asking about things specific to Utah or culturally “interesting”.

I can't think of anything except a tiny bag of salt from the Great Salt Lake or some little do-god made out of an elk antler.

RS-made resin grapes centerpiece.

A hundred pound bag of wheat kernels.

A pair of missionaries.

An MLM starter kit.

Or a trans athlete, since they are about to be banned and will have a lot of time on their hands.

Don’t think that would get through German customs, where one has to take an extensive course just to be licensed to fish!

I'd suggest you tell the girl to send you Utah things that mean something to her and that she thinks you will enjoy.

If you have to tell her what you want, she might just as well just get you a gift card and let you go shopping.

Ordinarily, I would agree, but she actually doesn’t know us very well. Her mother refused to let her and her sister have a relationship with my husband, so they have only been reconnected for a few years. He saw her in person for the first time since 2004 two years ago. That was the only time, because we live in Germany. I have only met her in person once, and that was in 2003.

She isn’t from Utah, but she lives there with her husband, who is from Idaho. She wants to send us a box.

I just thought maybe some of you folks from out West could offer suggestions on what’s interesting in Utah. I have only been to Washington State myself, and that was in 2005.

Now I see that the girl you are referring is more mature and married.

I'd suggest a book on the natural history of Utah. She might be able to find good ideas at the Natural History Museum of Utah at Univ. of Utah in SLC.

Another suggestion is a book on the human inhabitants of Utah, i.e., the native ancestors, migration up to the present.

Idle Isle chocolates from Brigham City. They have some chocolates that have crushed almonds on them. The only name we know them as is "nut balls." ha ha ha ha They are WONDERFUL. Their other chocolates are good, too. Bluebird chocolates are good (from Logan), but not as good as Idle Isle.

Salt water taffy. I assume you can find it in SLC. I used to buy at LaGoon when we'd go there. Haven't been there in AGES.

I'd say Maddox food, but then you couldn't ship it. I don't think it is as good as it used to be.

She is in Provo.

She needs to send you SL,UT tee shirts. A Utah Dowdle jigsaw puzzle of any Utah iconic area would be good. Not one of the many temples though. More like Arches or Bryce Canyon.

Ooh! Good ideas! She may not have a sense of humor as raunchy as mine…. :D. I am a puzzle fiend, though!

Bwahahahaha…. I don’t know that she has that much to spend. Maybe if she went to DI.

Utah has a lot of craft type stores (bazaar like) and fairs. They make all kinds of artsy knickknacks. Some are creative and interesting. Not all of them are tampon angels and dryer lint creations. Maybe she could send something she thinks is cute and homemade.

If you are into Christmas, maybe she could send you a Utah Xmas ornament to remember them. Maybe you'd like a sun catching window hanging or yard gizmo. Maybe a framed picture of them. Maybe if you give her a hint about something you might enjoy and she could support local craft ladies?

That’s a good idea. I think she’s actually the RS president in her ward. I bet they can give her ideas.

My husband has sent her boxes from Germany, so she wants to reciprocate. We have a box about to go with French pottery in it.

French pottery sounds lovely!
Maybe she could find some hand made pottery mugs of Utah wildlife or some such you could use for coffee. :-)

We got it on that trip documented in my latest video. We are lucky enough to live two hours from Soufflenheim, where pottery is made. I wish she could have known my husband when she was growing up. He could have helped her see the world. She did her mission in South SLC.

She’s actually an RS counselor, not the president.

Salt water taffy?

If she has access to a rock shop near provo...

A trilobite or carved rock.

I'm not familiar with Provo. Maybe something from a history museum?

Thanks so much for the suggestions, everyone! My husband’s daughter sent him a email indicating that these ideas were a big help. Now she’s inspired!
