For centuries, the location, and even existence, of the "cities of the plain" as based on mere speculation, and hence easily dismissed by skeptics (know any?). But recent finds appear to have located the cities, with strong evidence of a fiery, cataclysmic event. Now like the "Jesus ossuary" and other finds, scientists of different fields will examine, study, and conclude, many with their predilections to believe; and many, not.

At this early stage of things, the findings seem to support the Biblical record.

Tevai especially will be fascinated.

First, your sources are not neutral.

Second, I am aware of some of the research and the findings that are compatible with the basics of the Biblical narrative. But legends of burnt cities don't amount to religious certainty, especially when the names of rulers in the Jewish and Christian traditions appear to be Akkadian or Hittite rather than Hebrew.

Third, I have yet to read of any archeological evidence that 1) the residents of those cities were Hebrews, 2) they were unusually sinful, 2) someone named Lot lived there, 3) he offered his daughters to townsfolk who wanted to rape an angel, 4) his presumptive wife transformed into a condiment, and 5) his daughters drugged and raped him. What we are left with, then, is evidence going no farther than the probability that the scribes who compiled the OT knew of some cities on a plain that had burned down centuries before.

It's possible that a Tunguska-style meteor exploded above a collection of Bronze Age cities/villages and demolished them, generating an oral tradition that was embellished over time and recorded centuries later in what would eventually become the bible. But it's a ridiculous leap from that to "god burning them up because evil" and "It's no wonder that Lot's married children in the city laughed at him when he told them it was going to be destroyed!"
