The James Webb telescope has been put to work, photographing the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. The photographs are in scarlet to show maximum contrast. Looking at the glittering photos, it's hard to make the argument that God cares about what underwear you favor. It looks like the fun is just getting started -- we will be in for many treats over the coming years.

As long as nobody *else* can see me in my underwear all will be well. :)

It was the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (2003 to 2004) that showed what one could expect from the James Webb telescope. A lot of people thought it was a waste of time, this long exposure of a blank patch of sky. Turns out this blank spot was full of galaxies. The Hubble wasn't even close to seeing the edge of the Universe, if it exists.

It's hard to take photos of stars that give you a photon every few days. The new telescope has huge mirrors that collect light with sub-wavelength precision. The mirror maintains sub-micron deviation across a span of meters. That same star now delivers a photon every few minutes or seconds.

So, this new telescope is a real achievement. It's a great asset to astrophysics and enables new experiments that test the latest theories. Best of all, it was done without a single dollar from the Mormon church.
