An r/exmormon redditor wrote, "Spoke with a church administration employee this morning who said President Oaks and others in the Q15 are directing resources to ... take 'all possible steps to support a 2023/24 SCOTUS ruling to overturn of Obergefell v. Hodges.'"

He quotes his source, the Church is "... directing funds to State and Federal lobbyists and PACs that are focused (on) ensuring the overturn of Obergefell v. Hodges with this new Supreme Court."

At least so far they aren't asking for donations to fund this effort.

There are some comments from a Utah legislature lobbyist regarding his perception of the "delicate balance" the church has to maintain in Utah state legislative lobbying; kind of interesting.

That must be publicized--as soon as evidence is available. The church must be held responsible for participating in the disenfranchisement of a 160 million women.

Do I believe the Mormon church would do this? Most certainly. But with 70% of the U.S. now backing gay marriage, it would be a very foolish move on their part. I think they would lose a lot of young people over this.

Hopefully the SL Tribune will investigate this.

Not sure what lobbying has to do with it. The way you get issues before SCOTUS is through a court case. I suppose they could be lobbying for a Utah law that challenges Obergefell that opponents would sue to block. Sounds like something Oaks would do. Not sure what such a law would look like.

Maybe they are trying to get WY to pass such a law, since doing it in Utah would be a huge disincentive to attracting young, highly educated software/tech professionals to the state.

I'm getting tired of hearing about "religious liberty", which seems to mean "don't interfere with our discriminatory practices. [edit to add: In fact, codify our discrimination into the nation's laws, because, hey, God wants us to call the shots."

The Supreme Court is certainly on the move, whatever they can do to move power from the federal government to the state would be totally awesome. Remember it was the founding fathers who designed a government with limited power, they wanted states to be in control of powers such as education, welfare, roads, bridges,

See the trouble is that the silent majority those in the fly over country, the deplorables don't want stuff like they got in California, we want to run our own lives. Have our own government, get rid of gay marriage if that's what the people want, it's called freedom.

You really don't have a clue how a constitutional republic works. On the one hand you applaud the Founders' grant of rights ("a government with limited power") while on the other you say gay people should not have those rights "if that's what the people want." Which is it--do you like limited government power or do you like majoritarian rule over individuals? You can't have it both ways.

And "the silent majority those in fly over country?" They're actually a minority.

A very loud minority.

Any lobbying where the church ends up with egg on its face is a good thing.

Since ChurchCo hasn’t ever been in touch with many/ most of the rank & file, this should be repulsive to most members just like the Gigantic wealth they’ve accumulated…

But we Know how apathetic Sheeple are in Morland, don’t we?

ChurchCo operates - perpetuates the illusion that they always get to be in charge / micro-manage everyone else & hardly anyone says otherwise.
