Dating apps have drastically changed the dating landscape.

KEY POINTS

Dating opportunities for heterosexual men are diminishing as healthy relationship standards increase.

Men represent approximately 62% of dating app users, lowering their chances for matches.

Men need to address skills deficits to meet healthier relationship expectations

Younger and middle-aged men are the loneliest they’ve ever been in generations, and it’s probably going to get worst.

This is not my typical rosy view of relationships but a reality nonetheless. Over the last 30 years, men have become a larger portion of that growing group of long-term single people. And while you don’t actually need to be in a relationship to be happy, men typically are happier and healthier when partnered.

Here are three broad trends in the relationship landscape that suggest heterosexual men are in for a rough road ahead:

Dating Apps. Whether you’re just starting to date or you’re recently divorced and dating again, dating apps are a huge driver of new romantic connections in the United States. The only problem is that upwards of 62% of users are men and many women are overwhelmed with how many options they have. Competition in online dating is fierce, and lucky in-person chance encounters with dreamy partners are rarer than ever.

Relationship Standards. With so many options, it’s not surprising that women are increasingly selective. I do a live TikTok show (@abetterloveproject) and speak with hundreds of audience members every week; i hear recurring dating themes from women between the ages of 25 and 45: They prefer men who are emotionally available, good communicators, and share similar values.

Skills Deficits. For men, this means a relationship skills gap that, if not addressed, will likely lead to fewer dating opportunities, less patience for poor communication skills, and longer periods of being single. The problem for men is that emotional connection is the lifeblood of healthy, long-term love. Emotional connection requires all the skills that families are still not consistently teaching their young boys.

While there’s probably no chance of stemming the rising tide of unintentional single men, there is still good news.

The algorithms are becoming increasingly more complex on dating apps and other online platforms. One benefit is that great matches are on the rise. Hinge, one dating app, found through beta trials that 90% of users rated their first date positively, with 72% indicating wanting a second date.

How can men reap the benefit of the algorithms? Level up your mental health game. That means getting into some individual therapy to address your skills gap. It means valuing your own internal world and respecting your ideas enough to communicate them effectively. It means seeing intimacy, romance, and emotional connection as worthy of your time and effort.

Although I have not been reading materials on the matter, I have been observing this issue related to my youngest daughter.

I have chased off at least two dozen young males by simply asking them basic questions of what are your goals, do you have a life plan, do you have money saved, and what are your living conditions. Once I bring these issues up, their eyes glaze over and you never see them again. They are more or less interested in one thing, and the only skill they really have is texting at the speed of light. A couple of them tried to justify their position in life, and by the time I was finished with them, they were out the door never to return for a second date, which many times my daughter thanked me for since she saw their true colors.

The most recent one at the age of 25 had not yet moved out from mom, had no drivers license, had no full time job, and was great at texting at the speed of light. I went off one day on my daughter about how young males cannot seem to figure out who they are (including him) and perhaps they need to drop their pants and see if they have any b*** left. What I did not know is that they were having a facetime conversation on the phone, and he heard me, but for once the message came across clear.

He is getting his drivers license, saving money for a car, got a good paying beginning job, and is looking at apartments. Who knows maybe there is some hope for a few of them.

Sounds like your daughter may be alone a long time. Thanks mom!

Interesting assumption, but way off the mark. I can see why no one takes you seriously.

Maca, not all females want or need a pet.

"Why work hard for what comes so easy?", asked the guys who love Tinder.

"It means seeing intimacy, romance, and emotional connection as worthy of your time and effort."

Having your life turned upside-down by a psychopath is definitely worth the time and effort.

Misogyny and "male supremacism": Central driving force in the rise of the far right
Yes, there's a "men's crisis" — but not because guys are under attack. "Male supremacism" is what unites the right.

Over the course of roughly a year in 2020 and 2021, a number of events occurred that on the surface might appear unconnected. A "men's rights" attorney, who was somewhat famous for filing quixotic lawsuits against women's studies programs, bars that host "ladies nights" and the Selective Service (for declining to register women for the draft), showed up at the door of a federal judge who had presided over one of his cases, shooting her husband and son (the latter fatally).

Several months after that, a group of self-styled right-wing militiamen in Michigan plotted to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Around the same time, Donald Trump notoriously told the far-right Proud Boys, when asked about them during a campaign debate, to "stand back and stand by."

Then, in the first months of 2021, an unprecedented number of state bills restricting abortion access and trans people's rights were introduced across the country. All of this took place amid a steadily-growing tally of mass killing events related to the "incel" movement, in which men who feel aggrieved by sexual rejection nurture collective rage against women.

This flurry of facts is tabulated in the first pages of a new scholarly book, "Male Supremacism in the United States: From Patriarchal Traditionalism to Misogynist Incels and the Alt-Right," released this month as part of a Routledge series on fascism and the far right. The book, a collection of essays and studies from 14 academics and researchers, was edited by Emily Carian, Alex DiBranco and Chelsea Ebin. All three are among the cofounders of the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism, a first-of-its-kind center launched in 2019 to address a gap in scholarship on how organized misogyny serves as a vital cornerstone of right-wing activism.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We’ll see more and more Incels organizing into right wing (White Male Supremacists) militias, like the Proud Boys, Patriot Front, Patriot Prayer and 3%’ers, as more and more single men find themselves lonely and alienated from traditional social groups, like religions, fraternal clubs and community organizations.

Sadly, there are few alternatives that are readily apparent, except the internet, where we all end up siloing ourselves into insular groups of ‘us’ vs ‘them’.

And that’s a problem.

Especially when our worst enemies are working very hard to divide us against each other, using toxic masculinity and supremacy.
and they’re doing one hell of a job of it!
