What drives them? Why don't they quit? Why do they want to end everything?

The particulars of the cult or religion or movement do not matter.

They simply want to end the existence of everyone and everything that is not made by, for, or about them.

If they have no "enemies," they just create new bête noirs to fear and slay over and over again — and the purge cycle repeats ad infinitum.

Are they mad? Insane? Crazy?

Why are they so driven to first fear, then hate, and in the end, kill?

Why is living in an alternate reality that you know is not real somehow preferable to the reality that actually exists?

Plurality of thought or existence is anathema for them.

There were a few "counter culture" era films that I saw on late night TV growing up, but it wasn't one of them.

Definitely cultural deprivation. No wonder you have this attitude. Maybe a visit with the missionaries would help. Would you like to know more?
