Oh. I thought for a minute there you were hurling a derogatory slur at them.

Salt Lake, UT.

Unfortunate initials.

Oh, I'm a dope. Clueless. Terminally naïve.

And in that case, that it is meant to be a nasty slur (is there any other kind) I object.

Who needs to be flinging out anti-female slurs around here? Or anti- females of whom some people disapprove. Like it's their job to judge.

And. Just because a woman is Mormon does not mean she deserves to be called derogatory names.

There. I think I'm finished editing my original two-line post now.

But I wouldn't guarantee it.

Don't diss yourself, nighty. It's a virtue not to be a cynic about everything like I am. You gave the benefit of the doubt.

I usually do.

And I'm often wrong. :(

But thanks, dagny.

NG's naivete is both amusing and charming. It's nice to encounter someone with such a pure heart.

I'm Canadian eh?

But seriously, you guys. You're making me blush.

Thanks though.

I'll try to toughen up.

Or at least not keep tripping over the same pothole over and over.

I'd think it's more a chamber pot than a pothole.

Don't change.

Ha. Fitting too for a nurse (ex).

After an encounter with a chamber pot I may have to.

OK. I'll see myself out. Thankyouverymuch.

Agreed. Don't change. Nightingale. Cynicism has its place but it can be a real downer if it is allowed to fester and take over one's thinking.

She’s on a show, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake, I just shortened it to SL,UT Housewives, to be brief, and funny, but nobody has a sense of humor on this forum.

It was a bad attempt at a pun.
Obviously went over like a snake in a sacrament meeting.
It wasn’t meant to be derogatory.
I know a lot of Utahns who use the SL,UT spelling all the time.
It’s kind of like Portland’s ‘Keep Portland Wierd’ self deprecating slogan people use.
It’s hilarious, but I guess not in this ‘Uber-woke’ crowd.

That word, directed against females, is pretty much usually derogatory, by definition.

> I know a lot of Utahns who use the SL,UT spelling

It's different when it's referring to a place than to a human female.

Things are also different depending on who is using the phrase. Sometimes it's OK for some people to make certain statements but not for others to do so (i.e. outside the group, or similar situations).

> It’s hilarious, but I guess not in this

I'm pretty much last in line when it comes to the Uber-woke crowd, as you call it, but it's not "hilarious".

We've tried to explain why.

The dictionary defines it as being vulgar, derogatory and insulting.

Further, it states that "It is not cool to call any woman a slut".

Interestingly, one online dictionary states that the word was "Invented circa 1386 by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer (in the form of "sluttish") to describe a gross man of low moral character."

It's most always meant, and perceived, to be derogatory. That's why people react the way they do to its use.

If a person isn't intending to be derogatory they most likely choose a different word, whatever it is they're intending to say.

In the sub line of the OP in this thread, "SL,UT Housewife" reads as if the initials are an adjective that is describing the housewife. That's why it's objectionable, because written that way it's a slur and apparently that is exactly how you meant it to be read, because you later state that you think it's funny.

We're just trying to inform you that it's not.

Really? The dictionary is giving out moral advice now?

The term describes behaviour.

Whatever the gender, if the shoe fits...

Yes, but now we stray into the area of 'judgment.'

And while I totally agree that we can and should each make our respective judgments, all too many times, we do so with insufficient data...and willingly so, because we come prepared with agendas.

But yeah, uppity women are the worst, right?  ...ammI right? ... I'm right, right?

Not at all. The dictionary is not advising anything. It is noting common existing standards of usage; courtesy; and yes, morality.

Whether a person chooses to abide by commonly accepted norms or not is of course up to the individual. But said individual should not be surprised if doing what society disapproves of results in societal disapproval.

I predict the richest side with the biggest army of lawyers will win this one. We all know what God's money is REALLY for.

Mormons need to get over themselves. When they push back like this over something so stupid, it shows everyone they are a small, petty, controlling cultish religion.

OTOH, maybe the Mormon church realized that laughing things off like they did with the Broadway BoM show didn't work. Anything that shines a light on Mormon culture ends up disinfecting a few corners.

El Gato, yet again, you appear constitutionally incapable of reporting a story straight. You always distort or exaggerate, and occasionally just make stuff up from whole cloth.

Contrary to what you claimed in your subject line and the body of your post, Ms Gay is not being sued by LDS Inc. They are opposing her application for a trademark of the name "Bad Mormon." That boils down to them sending a letter to the trademark office stating their reasons for opposing granting the trademark. They may even send someone in person to state their objection at the hearing scheduled for May 2024.

The words sue, sued, suit, and lawsuit do not appear anywhere in the article. You just made that up, because hey, you almost always opt for inflamatory over accuracy.

And calling her a SL,UT Housewife, besides being a sophomoric, very old joke, is kind of misogynistic. I saw nothing in the article where she deserved that kind of innuendo.

So once again, inflammatory over accuracy.

I couldn't access the article without paying (I've reached my freebee limit with that one). So, I depend on the subject lines to help summarize the point being made. At least it's helpful when they do. It's not helpful if they mislead.

Is why I said Sued, it’s what the newspapers reported in their headlines.
I read the story and figured, close enough.
They’re going to court next month to argue against this woman using the name they already rejected as ‘a victory for Satan’
Why are they so quick to act, legally, against this woman, for her writing a book and soiling the name MORmON, when they are no longer Mormon and reject the name?
There’s not enough room in the header to fit all of that so, sued, works.
That’s what comments are for.

Then you should read articles about Utah written by Americans that understand American law, and Americans that have a better understanding of both Utah and Mormons.

The Daily Mail? Seriously? It made both local and national news in the US.

At least it wasn’t The Sun.

Oh, and you put a link to the NYTimes article in your OP, and the Times got the story right. Did you hunt around until you found another publication that got it wrong?

She is major cringe. She was on an episode of Below Deck Adventure S1 E6. Think of every stereotype you have ever heard and multiply it by 50. As the staff were going over her preference sheet it started - WAS MARRIED TO MORMON ROYALTY. Lord. I kid you not. They had zero clue what she was talking about. Then as soon as she got on the boat here it came again. She had only half her "welcome" champagne down when she was telling people to take their shirts off. All of them were very childish and inappropriately hyper sexual.

Funny enough, one of the crew is exmo, Kasie Faddah. She explained that there was no such thing as "royalty" and she assumed that the woman was talking about someone who had ties to mormon leaders. She explained why she left, talked a bit about her struggle with her family. She did a good job, made sure people were not left with the idea that all exmos were whackos.

Far from, as we know.

I may have to get up to speed and check out this show.

Or not.

I don't really go for silly reality shows much. Reality's OK but silly not so much.

You get to see some interesting parts of Norway as long as you can filter out the crap. I watch while I do other things so it is easy for me. Same goes for some of the ghost shows. From time to time one of them will go someplace of interest. But mostly, they are crap :)

She’s on Mormon Stories next up.
She sounds a little too close to home.
She kinda sounds like my X after she woke up and smelled the coffee. She hated men and any man made institution, including marriage, our marriage, which is when the cheating began, and probably long before I became aware of it.
Facebook is named in the vast majority of divorce cases and it was a big factor in our divorce. Social networking and internet dating sites are really doing a number on our heads and lives.
My kids have largely given up on social networking.
Ironically most adults have not.

5 times that I was a bad mormon without trying to be one (in no particular order).

1) I was really angry as a 12 year old. I did not want to pass the sacrament. I pleaded with the leaders. I was pissed off at the whole world, even god. So in good conscious I refused to partake of the bread. The bishopric took notice that I kept pushing away the tray. They called time-out and I was escorted into the foyer. They wanted me to confess that I was a sexual pervert, got a girl pregnant or some other sin. I told them that I was angry. I was ordered to go back in and partake or else!

2) I refused to share my testimony at an impromptu testimony meeting at the temple during a youth dead dunking trip.

3) I chose not to attend a Saturday service project and spent the day with my family.

4) I admitted that the telestial kingdom sounded like a better place than the "top level" celestial kingdom. That Sunday School answer got me in much trouble.

5) Stopping to help people who had car trouble was a greater sin than being on-time to a stake priesthood conference.

The reality is that your "moral compass" is right, and theirs is wrong!

Considering that in today's slang, the word "bad" means you are so hot you are on fire, and, joined the word "wicked" as a supreme compliment---I would say you were ahead of your time as a bad Mormon.

Which means being a good Mormon is kind of a slur?

So, I guess that makes the ultimate compliment is to be "evil".

I found the church completely starved of anything spiritual. It's a system of process. it's about as spiritual as having a colonoscopy or filing an income tax return.
