My mother always used to say, "How could a young farm boy know coffee tea liquor and tobacco were bad for you back in the 1800's?" as a way to prove he was a true prophet.



From what I have read--long before Joseph created the WoW, there had been many temperance movements in play throughout the area. Joseph based his Word of Wisdom on those already existing. This was not like he created something new. He did not pull his "health recommendations" out of Thin Air (AKA, the Holy Ghost).

Joseph always took what was around him and made it his own.

Tobacco was known to be bad long before Joseph Smith. As early as 1604, King James (yes, that King James) published a tract on tobacco's evils.

He called the use of tobacco "this filthie noveltie, so basely grounded, so foolishly received and so grossely mistaken"

and added this, just in case you still weren't sure where he stood:

" A custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse."

Yep, refused alcohol, then stopped by Mosser's for a beer.

I was told the use of wine for the Eucharist was stopped after too many over indulged, got drunk and sick.

Used the word of wisdom to stop the practice.

He refused the wine because he wanted to make sure they didn't amputate his leg.

I think sb and others refuted the veracity of this story.

So many of these so called faith promoting stories are pure propaganda that don't tell the real story.

I say bullshit. Joseph drank alcohol. Wine was served at the Kirkland temple opening celebration. Joseph wanted to open a bar as a money making side gig.

It was the women like Emma who were part of a popular temperance movement of the day that went after the drinking. Why? The men were getting shitfaced and behaving badly and they were tired of it.

The church didn’t start enforcing the Word of Wisdom until 1920. Before that the suggestion was not to show up at the temple reeking of tobacco smoke and liquor.

The story is basic Hagiography 101. It, like the First Vision, was a story made up long after the fact, designed to idealize JS. It is similar to stories about Kim Jong Un scoring three holes in one on his first ever round of golf (I made that up, but some of the stories about his exploits are that absurd)

At his death, ESPN said this about Kim Jong Un:
