"On this day in May 1970 Four students were killed at Kent State by the Ohio National guard.
The governor was behind in the polls and these deaths which he ordered helped him climb into contention. Though he lost by one point in 1970, he won re-election in 74 and 78. Some Parents told their (unharmed) kids who were at the scene, the Guard should have shot them all. That is how divided our nation was."

Agreed--although I admit that when I first saw that thread title I thought maybe another of the CSNY foursome had passed away.

I'm listening to Neil Young's song Ohio as my contribution to this thread.

I still have that album (Déjà Vu).
It also had a song called Teach Your Children. My parents decided it must be about brainwashing children to disobey their parents. I learned not to listen to devil music around my parents.

Everyone's got to have their Tiananmen Square.

At least Wilkinson let BYU students live.

If I remember correctly, two of the students that were shot had nothing to do with the protests. 50 years later it's very difficult to understand the shootings.

Nice reminder that the world's record player is stuck on the same song over and over. Everyone nowadays want to think things are worse than ever but we are part of the ever that is forever on repeat. This time it's our ever though and not just something from a history book.

We think we are SOOOOO evolved!

Always remember so that it never happens again? Ha Ha and Ha.

Well, it didn't happen again with that generation in the U.S. The problem is that each generation wants to reinvent the weel and not necessarily adhere to precedent.

If you don't believe me, just check out the changes over time with the LDS church with each different prophet.

I recall at the time justification was sought by labelling the crowd as leftist radicals who were a threat to order. Following history, I think, when government labelled the desperate v eterans of the Bonus Army of 1932 as communist agitators to justify the use of bayonets, machine guns, and tanks against them. Not Douglas McArthur's finest hour. Amazing that so few died.

And still is, though the division isn't as much along generational lines now--it's more between the wealthy and the poor and between the whites and non-whites.
