This is not true, and it has never been true.

The Founding Fathers were not inspired by god to write the Constitution.

America is not a christian nation, and is not founded on the basis of any religion, and has no state religion.

Religious freedom does not give you the right to destroy human life.

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Or they won't.

History is littered with the wrecks of democracies and republics whose people lost interest in their personal liberties. It is entirely possible that that fate will befall the United States as well.

"Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind."

"'Mankind.' That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom … Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution … but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist."

"And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!' Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

Yes, the fundies are going to try to remake the country in their image.

When you tell young people who are just starting in life, "We're going to take your future away, too bad, sorry," they will fight back.

But America has a long tradition of democracy -- unlike Spain, Italy, or Germany back in the 20s and 30s -- and that is what has kept the nation from descending into civil war.

Although the fighting will be fierce, I think they will ultimately fail.

The unfortunate part is the strife and turmoil that will result.

That is an interesting point. They could build parallel institutions that bypass the old guard. However, just as with the fears surrounding lowering the voting age to 18, nothing will happen because young people don't organize.

As for fighting, the scarcity in today's world is not usually a matter of life and death. A lot of it is artificial, given the world's productive capacity. The powers that be will let people "get by" rather than court civilisational collapse.

Not necessarily from the quarter that you think. As the saying goez, "the Road to Hell is paved with GOOD intentions."

By the looks of things, we are ruled by people who believe that they are Plato's "Philosopher Kings", who feel they have to guide the masses. Their "Noble Lie" (another Platonism) is to make the masses think they have more of a say in government than they do.

If you have something to say, spell it out. These ominous overtones without substance lead nowhere.

Here's my perennial question: why does the (mostly mainstream) media allow the fundamentalists to get a way with their bullcrap? They have always deferred to whatever the churches do or say, but now it has reached red alert stage. Again: why?

This is way past selling newspapers or ad space.

This is about if we are going to wind up like Afghanistan or Iran.

Three different states, three different models:

USA - Separation of church and state, non-interference in religion.

France - Laiceté, with something similar to the USA, but the state seized church buildings.

Mainland China – Enforced state control of all religion, imposition of atheism etc.

Yet religion still exists in all three. Some parts of France and the USA are very devout, more so than certain countries in the western world where religion and politics are not separate. As for China, you really don't want that system.

It should be noted that the US constitution does however advocate the notions that men (sic) are "created" and are "equal".

Wasn't the constitution written by slave holders?
