“We are not breathlessly smitten by the Internet, nor are we in any way underestimating its possibilities,” said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Church leader, in a 1997 speech. “We are just moving steadily, and we think wisely, to use it along with every other way we know to communicate with each other.”
I remember thinking at the time, even the I was a tbm, that:
I remember at the time that the Church had a mediocre web presence. Some individual wards had some pretty good web pages that put the church to shame. A few years later the church had all the wards shut down their web pages to present a "unified" apearance.
To be fair, this speech was from 1997, when a lot of people were just getting on the web. Many people didn't even have personal computers at that point. He does have quite the bombastic tone, though, doesn't he?
I can say that I was thoroughly smitten by the internet back then.
Jeff Holland the apostle is so much different that Jeff Holland the university president. I worked in the administration building and saw Jeff Holland all the time. He was a happy and pleasant man then.
As an apostle he seems so miserable and angry. He looks horrible. I know he has health problems but he’s so angry and takes his anger out on the members.
Maybe it’s he got to the top and saw there was nothing there. Everything he believed his whole life is wrong. Now he’s stuck. If he’s honest he alienates his family and friends and becomes the apostate apostle. It’s got to be miserable. He’s angry about something.
I think Holland busted his ass and the decoder ring said Drink More Ovaltine.
He's lost control of his life. From having watched my mom in her old age, there comes a time when you desperately want to retire. You want to sleep in, pursue your hobbies at your own pace, and enjoy your loved ones. You want to do what you want, when you want. Holland has lost that ability, and there is no amount of public adoration that can compensate for the loss of your freedom.
His only rest will be the grave, and he knows that.
I accompanied a person on a visit to that person's father-in-law. It was to drop something off. The person I was with (mysterious, huh?) was not allowed to see that person's father-in-law there at the Cal Worthington House of Senility because he, the father-in-law, was on a 'time out' as a result of once again groping a nurse...and not a male nurse.
This occurred in 1980. So, I've been carrying this special dream now for over 43 years!!!
Russia after the fall of communism would welcome missionaries with the awesome message of paying an American tax (tithing).
The internet would become the new Gabriel messenger to bring the gospel to more people around the world.
I offer no evidence or credence for this- Just maybe the church wished for a nuclear war that would annihilate the world before Y2K. The church wouldn't have to explain anything about Jesus failing to make an appearance.

Yep, but what a revelation it has been in the pursuit of truth!
