Transhumanism is the belief in using technology to enhance the human condition, potentially even to the point of overcoming death and fundamentally changing what it means to be human. It intersects with genetic engineering, nano-retooling of the human genome, cyborgization and human uploading. Iterated within the Mormon context, it can relate to doctrine which teaches about the eternal progression of humanity, the potential to become divine, and the physical resurrection of all mankind. These concepts can resonate with transhumanist visions of human enhancement, longevity, and transformation through technological means.
Transhumanist ideas certainly spark interesting conversations about the future and our potential growth, both spiritually and physically.
This is probably a stream within Mormon thought that few of you are aware of. The church itself does not take much of a stance on the matter other than trying to force its members online and investigating heavily into NASDAQ to fatten up its cybercalves.
Their website:
https://www.transfigurism.org/"The Mormon Transhumanist Association promotes abundant flourishing through the compassionate use of science and technology.
"We explore the intersection of science, technology, and religion. We believe that human ingenuity is essential for positive outcomes (both for us and the biosphere), that the learning that comes from this process is necessary for our exaltation, and that the religious impulse is a core part of humanity that should be leveraged for good. Our Affirmation lists additional beliefs.
"We meet together, hold conferences, and promote awareness of these topics. We also foster dialog between people of diverse backgrounds. We seek to persuade secular people that religion and science are not mutually exclusive, and to persuade religious people that science and technology are essential aspects of the divine. We encourage both of these audiences to engage with the world more wholeheartedly."
