A major earthquake has occurred near the east coast of Taiwan with a magnitude of 7.4, according to data from the US Geological Survey. It was followed by a 6.5 magnitude aftershock.
The earthquake epicenter is located approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien. It is the strongest to impact the island in 25 years, according to a spokesperson from Taiwan's Central Weather Administration.
A tsunami warning has been issued in Taiwan following an earthquake that struck Wednesday morning, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA).
A tsunami warning was also in place in southern Japan for 9 feet, according to Japan's Meteorological Agency.

I served in Hualien oh so many years ago. Beautiful town.

It's shocking what happened to some of the buildings there. Hopefully they were able to rescue many of the people.

Innovative building engineering had a very positive effect, minimizing building collapses and casualties. (Note: this is a conservative site, but the article is non-political.)
