I'm a food snob. I admit it. And it's true that my funds are limited and dwindling. Understood.

However,

I've been tasked with making the scalloped potatoes today and my aunt expects me to use her cheapy, yellow, supermarket cheddar cheese in the dish. I really want to make them with Gruyère. Should I go to the trouble of buying it?

I would go with a combination of the two- Gruyere is fabulous with sharp cheddar!

If you're strapped for cash, I don't know that I'd waste the Gruyere on a large crowd if they're not going to appreciate it.

Have you considered going with Gouda? I think scalloped potatoes are really good when you use a smoked gouda.

I've never heard of cheddar cheese in a tub, although I did grow up on that big ole brick of cheese food business. I think it dated back to The Great Depression.

Is that stuff in a tub even cheese? If it's cheese food, I'd avoid it like the plague. Unless you're not eating it. In that case, feed 'em whatever you want and save the Gruyère for yourself.

Can't help you...I make mine without the cheese.

She definitely wants cheese. I went ahead and splurged on some Gruyère. The potatoes will be awesome.

Because I slice my cheese with a vegetable peeler.
