I went to the grocery store today at about noon. The place was busy. All around were women, fresh from church, in their Easter dresses. This being the Bible Belt rather than the MoZone, their dresses were designed for the excellent spring weather. Sleeveless and spaghetti strap dresses abounded. No one looked immodest. No one looked like walking pornography. They just looked fresh, happy and pretty.

It was funny, though to see some of them in the beer section. Jesus is risen! Halleluja! Pass me another brewski! They would need to wait for the clock to tick over to 1:00 before they could buy it, though. Such are the liquor laws here. At least it's not a dry county.

Is seeing all the little children dressed up, especially the Blacks going to church. And, gasp, most of them in sleeveless dresses. It's 85 degrees in Memphis today. And I love all the ladies in hats.

A few years ago one of my friends from Utah came out and wanted to go to a Black church for Easter so she could hear a good mass choir. So we went to the reverend Al Green's church (yes, THE Al Green, the jazz singer). We just sat there going "this is real, we're not really on a movie set."

Al Green isn't always there, they have several associate pastors, but he was there that day and preached and would break out into song in the middle of the service. Then the little kids did their Easter performance. Talk about THE SPIRIT. There were "Amens" and "Hallelujah's" throughout, fantastic choir music that made you want to get on your feet, people standing up out of the blue and repenting, someone getting baptized in the font on the front balcony. And we were welcomed by everyone. Definately the best Easter service ever.

And spikey heels and short skirts and bright colors.
