Evolution does indeed exist and can be seen working among species even today. Just like anything else in the sciences, theories can be stretched and warped to meet an agenda. (though careful scientific inquiry will show the such approaches are speculative only) There are people who inaccuratelyuse evolution to explain gaps in our knowledge. Sometimes it comes out as nothing more than speculation, but it is at least speculation founded on a verifiable principle.

I don't always buy everything I have learned about evolution because some of it is based on shoddy work, but when the source and methodology are sound it would be just as irresponsible to assume that it is all false as it would be to assume that a religion is true based on a feeling in a single moment of time. Do your own research before forming an opinion.

On another note, I think it is great to have a healthy skepticism of current research. The moment everyone becomes complacent in science and assumes that the "authorities" have it all figured out science will find itself in no better shape than religion. Fortunately, the very nature of the scientific method invites questioning!

Humanity is a very interesting twist in evolution. Never before has a species evolved such an ability to communicate and fabricate. And even more interesting is how fast our intelligence has evolved. For civilization to only be a few tens of thousand years old is remarkable when compared to the level and sophistication civilization is at today. Intelligence has given us such an enormous edge over all other species, and even over other members of our own species, that the evolution curve skyrocketted, so to speak, over the period of a few thousand years.

But then something strange happened, and we're in the middle of this brand new stage of evolution right now. This has only been developing for a few thousand years. We evolved a conscience. All of a sudden, with the development of nations and factions, it became advantageous to care about other people. The stronger nations began to shift from being the strongest and most aggressive, to the most united and benevolent.

The percentage of human beings who die in war has been dropping for thousands of years, and has plummetted in the past century due to advances in telecommunications.

Now we're at the peak of a new era in human evolution - one in which strength, aggression, and even intelligence pose no evolutionary advantages. The can be even argued as disadvantages.

In addition, advances in transportation have made for a rather homogenous mixing of DNA, where geography will likely no longer play a role in natural selection.

How will humanity evolve from here on out? We have no idea, the cards have never been stacked like this before in the history of the world.
