Read through the Amazon preview of the book. Pretty good and I definitely agree that it is amazing how Joseph Smith started a religious movement with such freedom and encouraging of personal revelation has turned into one of the most dogmatic and hierarchal organizations on the planet.

Look at what happened to the original witnesses and those who disagreed with him...

Obedience vs. Orthodoxy

You got that right, SLCabbie. Joseph wanted unquestioning obedience; it didn't matter what you believed, as long as you did what you were told. There's been a push in the last 40 years for a more rigid orthodoxy, but obedience is still what matters most.

BTW, I think Joseph's inability to handle disagreement from his "subordinates" is a sign of the man's narcissistic personality.
