So I have the Chili in the crock pot and I am wondering if anyone has ever had corn bread with it. I personally never had it before and just recently heard of doing it. What are your thoughts of making some corn bread muffins to go along with my chili.

Makes total sense. Put a hunk of it at the bottom of the bowl, dump the chili on top of it. BAM.

In Texas and the South-always. A good box mix (hush your mouth) is Krusteaz.

Is there any other way to eat it? I guess you could eat it with crackers, but only if you're out of cornbread mix. We southerners eat cornbread with soup, too. And cornbread and buttermilk is a southern staple.

Cornbread and chili is a pretty normal combination here in the Great Southwest. Cornbread with green chilies in it is also common. Throw in a couple of tamales and your set-especially in cold weather.

OMK! (Oh my kativicky!) Corn bread with chili is one of the BEST food combinations EVER.

(Not gonna tell you your biz but in my cornbread I use an extra egg and substitute half brown sugar for the white sugar...)

As csuprovograd noted, warm with butter rocks our world...

I always ate crackers with my chili because my parent have never heard of eating corn bread with it. Tonight will be the first night trying it. Hopefully dad will be a champ and go along. I am going to have to return and report after dinner to let you all know how it went.

I used to make fun of my a Dad for not being able to eat Mexican food, chili, or anything spicy......enjoy some in my behalf. (Okay, Dad, so I'm publicly apologizing for my stupid snickering those many years ago. Please, retract the evil eye so that I can at least enjoy a slice of pizza without a Pecid AC chaser all the time! Please!! Your son.)

Yes - if your Chili sucks - get Hormel no beans. I won first place at a chili contest using Hormel no beans. I had to work and could not make a batch. I declined the award.

I just got done with dinner and I really enjoyed it. I broke off pieces of my muffins that I made and dipped it in my chili as I went. I think that I will be making corn bread muffins with my chili in the future. Dad wasn't a fan of the corn bread muffins though but that just means more for me.

But corn bread works well, too. You can always make green chili and cheese cornbread, too, for a kick.

I learned something new today at lunch- A vegetarian chili with beans, corn and tomatoes is called sagamity. So if some smart ass ever tells you what "real chili" you can answer, "You're absolutely right, it's authentic sagamity. ";)

It's the perfect bread to go with chili. You won't have any leftovers.

Never liked chili as a child but cornbread with butter and jam
was great. I'll try it with butter and honey next.

Another option is a big warm flour tortilla folded into a triangle.

Also, pizza and beer go together, in case you weren't aware. Beer can also go with hotdogs, though that should be limited to sports stadiums or Fourth of July picnics.

Do cornbread and chili go together?! Kids these days! Oy.

I'm no southerner, and I just can't do cornbread and don't see the lure. You can't even butter it because it comes all apart in the palm of your hand, and all you're left with is chunks. How about Ritz crackers instead? There must be something, anything.

Bake your own cornbread in a cast iron skillet. Use high-quality (fresh!) cornmeal and buttermilk, and don't make it super sweet.

Serve it right out of the oven with nothing but butter. It's easy and amazing.

When baking cornbread, use a can of creamed corn for part of the liquid ingredients. The cornbread will be very moist and have those bits of real corn in it. If someone wants the recipe I'll post it, I'm about to leave for dinner with my son and family.

Midwesterner here--never did cornbread with chili--only crackers with chili (saltines or oyster crackers), cornbread was for ham and beans or any kind of 12-bean-type soup. (And only oyster crackers with oyster stew.) :)

My dad was raised in the Midwest as well and I asked him if he ever had cornbread with Chili and he said no and that he never heard of such a thing. Like you, the only time I remember having corn bread was with ham and beans which was only a couple times a year.

Here in Nebraska, chili is always paired with cinnamon rolls. I had never heard of the combination until I moved here, but they actually go good together.

Then there's Cincinnati style "chili" which is bland and watery and served over spaghetti. You have to pile onions and cheese on it to get it to taste like anything.

But good chili with cornbread? Fabulous.

The Okie relatives-of-relatives-of-relatives of our family have been living on the combination at least since the Dust Bowl and possibly longer. They did a brief stint in Texas, which is probably where they got the idea to put chili in the beans. The beans and corn combine to form a complete protein.

We usually have chili with pasta or rice but methinks I'm going to have to look up a recipe for cornbread. It's not the kind of thing I'l likely to find in a box mix here in Oz.

Are we talking chili made with minced beef and kidney beans cooked together with lots of crushed tomatoes and chili powder ( or finely chopped green chilis if I can be bothered)?

Texans say it's sacrilege to put beans in chili.

Makes perfect sense....we do this about half the time (the other half being divided between spaghetti and Fritos.
