even if the church doctrine is that the choicest will have multiple wives and populate planets with those wives after death...

it is irrelevant -

she thinks that it is irrelevant bc most of her tbm friends and herself don't believe that is true

when asked whether it makes a difference that she is a member of a church that believes that this is true...i.e.

she says she takes from the church what she agrees with and ignores the rest.

I think that this is a very common position these days...illogical but common. Perhaps the only way sane people who want to maintain their social network can keep their heads from exploding?

Yeah, as I understand it, that is basically how "New Order Mormonism" works...

I explained to her that taking parts that you agree with but ignoring the rest may be fine if you are a unitarian, or maybe a methodist i.e. belong to a church that doesn't require you to believe that the church is perfect and "god's" church,

but when the church is claiming to have the truth...all of it... and a direct, first in line position to god, you can't just take what you want and forget the rest right?

she replies, the lds church is really no different than methodist, unitarian etc.

she sees no difference.

so...I ask...is the church the "true" church is it "gods" church?

she says...doesn't matter

Dare her to argue these points at church. Dare her to advocate these things in Sunday School and Relief Society lessons. It's interesting that many Mormons hold "personal beliefs" that would get them excommunicated if they advocated them publicly.

You may wish to point out that you do the same. You pick and choose what parts you like as well. You just can't seem to find anything to like.

I get the sense from this conversation and from listening to her like minded friends discuss "apostates" that - the are truly
messed in the head.

Somehow, none of them appear to accept that if the church is god's, then they must agree with god by accepting his doctrines

yet

they are able to still discern all the reasons why apostates no longer participate like:

pornography
laziness
depression
offended
etc.

the frustration is mounting

Perfect! I'd respond with "I agree" and that I just choose more to disagree with....like all of it.

Also, if the churches truthfulness "doesn't matter" and its the same as any other church....why bother going of you don't feel like it?

I'm sure "the church" would disagree with her.

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.

S&G, "The Boxer"

Beautiful song. And so appropriate for the morg. "All lies and jests". Ain't that Joe the 'Ho to a T?

That's funny - I haven't heard that song in years but I instantly recognized the lyrics. Interesting - thanks for posting it.

The problem that I had with the church on this subject was the divide between heaven and the lower kingdoms. So, if you want to be married, you automatically have to have more than one wife? What if you only want one? And if you are married to your eternal wives, then you automatically are supposed to become a god over your own planet? What if you don't want to become a god? Is there no in between? Good thing it isn't true, cause it's upside-down stupid.

Pick and choose. It's probably more common outside the corridor.

One could also look at it as being similar to when the spouse of an abusive person ignores their more damaging traits, only focusing on what they consider the good.

I can't tell you the number of Mormon women I have spoken to who just close their eyes and hope on "faith" that after all their hard work, and effort, and sacrifices, that God will bless them and heaven won't really be the way actual church texts say it is.

So basically they are saying they can't be friends with these people without the church. So they are relying on a "church" to supply friends. Very sad indeed. If they all got out of the cult then those friends could really enjoy life. But they are in too deep. May take three or four to leave before most of them ever would. They are not independent thinkers.

Does she take from her temple covenants what she likes, and leave the rest?

The covenants require you to be all-in. You MUST follow the prophet! You MUST pay the tithe! You MUST give all you have the LDSInc.!

Or is the temple covenant something that she has chosen to leave aside, in her glorious walk with the Mo god?

But having been raised Methodist, I don't think some of you understand the concept of Christ's Church very well. All believers in JC are considered part of the universal body of Christ here on earth now. Doesn't matter what flavor of religion, only that you love God and strive to love one another. Of course, JS altered it so that only Mo's are part of the exclusive club, but those rules are his rules.

Can you live that way or live with the fact that she lives that way? There really is no norm... If you cant deal with it, move on...
