Right around the time that Larry H. Miller was doing the whole, "God hates gays, and so do I" thing with the movie Brokeback Mountain, he was found to be shouting during a Jazz practice at the players, "You bunch of overpaid twinks."

Not many people happened to think much of it or know what in the crap he was talking about.

However, the gay community did. Why? Because that word comes from the gay community.

A 'twink' is a cute young boy who looks like a very cute young boy. He's the male equivalent of the "schoolgirl" fantasy. And the term was NOT well known in the heterosexual world. I had no clue, and it was only my gay brother who said, go google it, and you'll see what I mean.

AND BOY HOWDY DID I! It was like an MTC after gym time reunion without the aging!

What's the point of this? Well, it's just interesting that back in 2006, a very prominent Mormon who was being very prominent about his disdain for showing a film where gay cowboys did gay things and were trying to not be so gay but finding out that maybe it wasn't the gay that was wrong but how everyone else viewed gaiety happened to use a VERY, VERY gay term (as a pejorative, yes) but one that wasn't known by heterosexuals of MY generation let alone HIS generation.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.............

When somebody uses the term "twink" all I can think about are a couple of my characters on World of Warcraft......

I have had a number of very odd public conversations because of WoW and my misunderstanding of this word.

I'm at Taco Bell having a conversation with my brother. It's very crowded. I'm loudly talking about my "twinks" and which is my favorite. Their names I'm sure did not help. Demetrius and Lysander. Damn you Shakespeare.

I thought the odd looks were because I was a gamer. Oh no. The odd looks were because I was inadvertently talking about my nonexistent gay fetish.

I'd be embaraced except that it's so damn funny to me now.

And there was some TV preacher guy (Falwell?) who was obsessed with the Tinky Winky character. Tinky Winky...Twink(ie) Twink(ie)? Makes you wonder about the preacher guy and whether he was a bit pre-disposed to see things that sailed over the heads of everyone else. ;o)

I guess it goes to show how deep in the closet I was. My mother likes to keep canaries, and at my suggestion, named one of them Twink. I had gotten it out of one of the Dr. Dolittle stories I used to love as a kid. No wonder my uncle looked at me funny when he heard the bird's name (he was right, but for the wrong reason!). For the etymologists in the group, the gay term comes from Twinkie, a snack cake in the USA, which has a gooey white cream filling. Do I need to elaborate?

Well, I can't say I've ever heard of an obsessive homophobe who, after years of homophobia, turned out to be straight. If this was Miller's only incident, it doesn't prove anything. But if he has a long history of gay-bashing remarks, then I think I know why he liked to hang around sportsmen.

But then again I've learned it from watching gay porn... I think you might be on to something!
