Also as a nevermo, I'm even more confused.

If you leave off the w. in #6 making ko-lawb, is it more:

KO-lawb (long "o" as in "toe", emphasis on the first syllable) or
ko-LAWB (short "o" as in "pot" emphasis on the second)

I just looked here:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_pronounce_kolob

and according to there it would be like the first I listed above. "Koh-lob" The first o is long as in "cola" and the second o is short as in "oxygen.

makes me think of paying for beer and sex. Was Joseph trying to think of a name for a bar with hookers? Now THAT would be an awesome name!

Even better question - where the heck is it? Which direction and how far? If we know the name, then surely JS could have told us where in the night sky we could find it.....

But mentioning Kolob to a Mormon anymore is most likely to get a blank stare and a "huh"?
It really isn't in the curriculum anymore. It's one of those oddities that a seminary/institute teacher might explain as an aside if asked, but otherwise this is something a Mormon might even say "where does it say that?"

there are large swaths of their own scriptures and the old testament that mormons just don't go, sort of high-weeds area that they know is there but let it go. It's only the occasional new-years-resolution type reader that runs across stuff like Kolob, then most of them don't pay much attention. The scriptures are famous for their abstract nebularity and as a believer I was just accustomed to God just being so much smarter than me that I shouldn't expect to get it. Supposedly the scriptures "unfold" throughout your life, so rather than seeing bullshit as bullshit you see it as a mystery yet to be unfolded, when you're spiritually mature enough.

The crux of matter is whether or not you can Hie to Kolob in the twinkling of an eye. No one can, therefore where it is and how it pronounced are both moot issues.

I am informed that if it does exist, it is a total backwater and none of it's planets even have a stargate.

I've always heard it pronounced with the first "o" long and the second short.

Ko- - as in go or no

and

-lob - as in Bob or mob

I have to say, I like Stumbling's answer best ...
