That doesn't explain what Billy Jo and the girl threw off the bridge before he jumped.

Back in the 60s as a teenager that was a big topic among the teen girls.

I never found out what it was. I guessed it was an engagement ring or maybe a fetus.

I didn't really like the song then and 40 years later it still hasn't grown on me.

Did Bobbie Gentry ever explain the lyrics about what went off the Tallahatchie Bridge? If so, I never bothered to find out.

A baby or aborted fetus was a popular theory.

That the preacher was saying it wasn't a suicide.

If we are still debating it after 40 plus years, it must have been a good song. I liked it and now I have it stuck in my head. Thanks a bunch.

Well, this is interesting, so I'll hijack it, because I want to know why Little Sister went to Andy's house and shot him instead of Seth Amos. At least Andy was honest & fessed up to his best friend.

If you don't know what the hell I'm talkin' about you don't listen to enough Country & Western (probably a good thing...) :-)

Was that "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"? If so, they played it on all the rock stations

Vickie Lawrence recorded the original "Lights went out in Georgia"
Bobbie Gentry did "Ode to Billie Joe"
And if it's "Billie", well, I always thought that was the girl!

I meant the song about the little sister quoted by the other poster. I know "Ode to Billie Joe" but I have forgotten "The Nights that the Lights Went Out in Georgia"

Billy Joe Mcallister and the girlfriend were seen by the preacher man, throwing something off the bridge

Then Billy Joe Mcallister jumped of the bridge

They threw a ragdoll off the bridge--there is a novel associated with the movie that explains it.

Seems Billy Joe is feeling guilty about a 'homosexual experience'. He was raped. And the ragdoll is supposedly a symbol of what might have been. The girl leaves town for the 'correct' amount of time in order to get folks to thing Billy Joe impregnated her rather than to have them believe the truth: he was raped by the football heroes and commited suicide.

Again, there is a novel. Look it up and read it. Welcome to the deep south. Not so different from Provo, Utah.

Wow. Can you tell I spent time in the Clarksville/Nashville area circa 1960 whatever? WSM TV and the Grand Old Opry!
