I wanted to reply to some of the great stuff in that last thread but, alas, the gods of brevity intervened.

Damn gods.

Enlighten me further, ye devotees of Apollo.

Lot's Wife likes some good country music, to be sure, although some might argue that the last Cash albums don't count.

But I gotta say, my droogs, that you guys are killing me. Vice President Boner will tell you I'm mainly a baroque condiment, which is true, but both the soulful stuff and particularly Ludwig Van always bring out the tears.

My favorite Beethoven symphony is the Ninth, conventionally, but the 7th makes Lot's Wife weep like a baby shaker of salt. A shot to the heart, that one is...

And GregS!!!

A man who understands the beauty of the American Recordings Cash did in his last days. The final album was a little weak because he was one foot in the grave, but man there are some dark beauties in the first three or four.

And that cover of Hurt? You can feel the needle!

Wagner once danced to the Seventh while his son-in-law Liszt played it on the piano. A friend of LvB’s said Beethoven had to have been drunk to have composed the finale with the double-basses wobbling on a pedal point.

LvB’s favorite symphony was the Third—written for Napoleon—as a champion of the common man. When Beethoven heard Napoleon crowned himself emperor, he tore up the title page and re-dedicated it as—Heroic Symphony, dedicated to the memory of a great man.

Later when Beethoven heard of Napoleon’s death he remarked, “Did I not foresee the tragedy when I wrote the funeral march in the Eroica?”

And, please, no historically-informed performance for Beethoven—vibrato on the strings, and full orchestra—these aren’t museum pieces! Szell, Karajan, or Bernstein!

As for country, I prefer Clint Black, Colin Raye, and Kenny (sans shoes, shirt, or problems). And sometimes, I’ve got a BBQ stain on my white T-Shirt. Abd who wouldn’t be crazy for a Mercury? Excuse me, I’ve got Dave Brubeck’s Take Five on the turntable.

I love you folks!

My personal opinion is that the Eroica is one of the finest pieces of music ever composed.

This is my last contribution.

Maybe someday we'll have a dinner and then sit around singing?

I'm working and not engaged right now.

Just want to say, for the nonce, that it would be a pleasure to do that with you guys.

I hope to do it one day.

I'm pretty eclectic in my music loves. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and was a surf/hot rod music freak until the British invasion happened and then I went to Ricks in '66, met some dudes from Pittsburgh, Philly and New York who turned me on to R&B and the Blues which led me to classic country and Bluegrass. I've also gained an appreciation for the male tenor operatic voice. So I'm never at a loss for something to groove to on youtube.

Back to Beth's covers idea, particularly Johnny Cash covers.

GregS mentioned Hurt, which may be my favorite of the bunch.

But consider also

-I Won't Back Down.

-I Hung My Head

-God's Gonna Cut You Down

There are so many. . .
