There are positive and negative cultural bridge burning out there. The negative is the horrific third party burning to force someone out of their cultural group. An example is stealing children to be freedom fighters and forcing them to do something before they leave that makes their return impossible. I'll let you fill in that blank.

In the positive realm if say I could drink wine in front of my family (done it) and they would be eternally convinced of my outgroup, untouchably non-Mormon self I would love it. I'm afraid this isn't the case with a cult, er, culture where they baptize dead people who never heard of Mormonism.

So, alas, I'm afraid the excommunication route is it. And maybe it isn't. Who knows. What I do know is Mormonism is definitely a destructive cult. A huge sign of this is the fact that I can never leave it with regards to family. It even extends to non-related Mormons. They feel like I'm recoverable because of God's Great Plan of Happiness. Why in the Hell is it "Happiness?" It is Hell to me and they will never see it. Why can't I have a personal "Great Apostasy"? Oh yeah, see needing excommunication. I'm apostate just not in great apostasy. I would have to divorce my wife and move to Southern Utah looking for a personal harem to house my particular brand of Mormon crazy that supports my sex addiction which isn't but just my natural man looking for a religiously sanctioned outlet.

So resigning didn't get you the closure you needed or do people just see it as something you can easily reverse?

I haven't resigned. I'm thinking about it but it doesn't have much weight.

I tried very hard to get excommunicated when I was younger but they just saw me as a good dude that would come around. If you are bad then you are just part of what they are. The leaders are mostly bad dudes I think. They would shank you in the back for money in two seconds probably. Especially in the work force.

It's YOU calling the shots, not them.

Rather than trying to provoke them into "firing" them, just tell them, "I choose to quit this stuff."

Good luck. Reclaim your own power.

I don't doubt it.

It does. I was just talking to my younger brother (the one I'm really close to) last night and he didn't know I had resigned. He kept saying that they'd ex him, that he couldn't resign, and I couldn't convince him otherwise. He asked about my ex and if he resigned and I said yes, and he said, "So you aren't temple married anymore?" Yep. It has made a huge difference in my mental attitude about mormonism.

I rejected all that they are by walking away. It has been a huge load taken off my shoulders. It may be more of a BREAK from the cult than you could ever believe.

I'd go through that lawyer who does the resignations now. I know someone has posted his link before (or is it a she?).

They are still calling the shots after you resign. In my mind, you are never really resigned from their cult. They hold your records hostage and refuse to destroy them. That is a problem.

Even if they do have records, wouldn't moving around help mess things up after the person resigns?

They have records and they taught the FBI a thing or two about tracking people I seem to recall. Lots of Mormons in the FBI.

I sought excommunication in the early 80s as a way of leaving Mormonism behind...I never knew about resignation back then. I enjoyed the experienced and took charge enough to have a captive audience in the room when they were foolish enough to ask if I had anything to say. With pages of notes I proceeded to say it. I heard nothing from them for several years until one day a note arrived with my ward budget assessment quickly followed by a visit from the new bishop. Perhaps not his fault but he got the brunt of my what is it about me seeking excommunication that you do not understand. This was in the late 80s. In 2005 I moved to the Boise area and promptly received a targeted visit from missionaries. That was thirteen years ago and since then nothing. It does tell me though that being Xed means your records are still on a ward roll in some way. Perhaps an additional resignation letter might be in order.

I resigned. It was very, very effective way of burning the path back to Mormonism bridge. You're basically telling the church that you want nothing to with them.
