My HS girlfriend used to introduce me as her "all brawn and no brain" boyfriend. I kinda was I guess... all jock and no study, graduated HS with a whopping 1.96 GPA. She was all A's and in every club under the sun.
I finished undergrad and grad school with honors in both. So, neener neener Jan! :)
Sorry, that was totally self-serving but she found me on FB recently and just about shat herself.

Was she surprised that you were more successful than she would've hoped for you, or . . . ?
Yep, totally. Last she heard, I was in Viet Nam. She was surprised that I'd finished undergrad and grad school, could speak three languages.... It had been 40 years, however. Back in the day, she was studious, smart, and everyone wondered why the hell she was dating me.
We've since pieced together memories that had become faded and confusing. Exchanged photos of back in the day and have had a grande ol' time.!
Big understatement. I have this room in our house where my wife and kids refuse to go. Piles of books, crumpled up notes, all kinds of experiments (failed and ongoing), sheet music, instruments. It's my dream room, and it's an absolute mess.
And I know where everything is...until I want to use it. Then it's lost.
Books (piles of them) Microscope Plant press Sewing machine (fabric, stuff along those lines) Camera stuff German and Chinese language tapes Stuffed animals Marquetry designs and projects Antique glassware and teapot collection Ship model under construction with three others waiting to be built My computer (and computer stuff) that I am using now. Two desks and a queen-sized bed (for guests).
I vacuumed it Sunday.
I could get lost in here for hours and not surface again until dinner time. :-)
Pick a synonym for weird. I've been called eccentric, insane, strange, different, quirky, odd, memorable, etc. I'm crazy, people! Really, I swear, I'm pretty much insane. Just because I have a paintbrush in my hand, that doesn't turn crazy into quirky or complex or creative. I love being an artist sometimes though. It excuses so so much of my anti-social behavior.
patootie what someone says or thinks about me. I refuse to "TAKE" offense. I also refuse to take what others do and say personally. That is about them, not me. It's their insecurities and lack of manners speaking, etc.
Don't like me, or my opinions, or my decisions and choices, or my perspective, or how I do this or that? Why oh why would I even care? Negative, critical, denigrating opinions are of no value to me. Besides, that is about the person voicing them, not me. Heard the adage: someone else's opinion of you is none of your business.
I like these statements. They hold value for me.
The Second Agreement Don't Take Anything Personally Become immune to poison. The whole world can gossip about you,and if you don't take it personally, you are immune. Immunity to poison in the middle of hell is the gift of the Second Agreement From: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
It's about owning your own power and not allowing others to mess up your day!
I get underestimated all the time. I think it is a strategic advantage. Some problem will come up (at work) and the gee-whiz geniuses will not even know how to start to solve the problem. Then I get involved and in my practical way solve the problem. I get alot of blank looks and WTF statements and go on my way, saying very little.
I was always viewed as "a piece of furniture" growing up. Was short, not jockly in any way, average, etc. Now, at 50, I look pretty darn good. Still have hair, grew some, not overweight, "kind-sexy-all-knowing eyes", and people (women) seem to pay attention now. But I'm married, don't pay them any attention. But a bit of an ego trip for a guy who always was ignored in HS and college and even in my twenties...
