3+ minutes of YoYo Ma and Bach: Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Prélude

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1prweT95Mo0

Be careful, though. You will find yourself watching other YoYo Ma stuff. And pretty soon, there goes an hour.

And I promise, this is my last post for the day.

This suite features prominently (played by YoYo) in the film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, one of my favorite films. It's fun to watch Russell Crow and Paul Bettany play a cello/violin duet - pretty sure it's not this suite, though.

Cello is, in my mind, perhaps the most beautiful instrument in existence.

The Hauser is very good. Yo Yo Ma is very good. My favorite is Rostropovich; his Bach Suites (only $15.26 at an Amazon new you!) are exquisite.

Thanks for the thread and the link, MMYN.

Every time I watch this (many, many times), I get a bit emotional. Thanks for posting.

When I watch that, I weep like a baby.

It's like a walk in nature on a rainy day, when the clouds gradually open and you find yourself standing in glorious sunshine.

Humans are that they might have an Ode to Joy.

Yes.

Nothing in Mormonism can compare to the divinity in the glorious Ninth.

Or in Bach's Cello Suites!

The greatest works and songs can be taken far from their original and still "work," such as this arrangement for guitar:

Absolutely.

The best art is a template, an outline, something whose implications can be explored many, many times. Although he isn't my favorite, Glenn Gould demonstrated that with Goldberg in what--1955? That's why fanatics have so many different performances of the great pieces: to experience different interpretations, sometimes by people of real genius.

The best ballet and drama are the same. Each presentation of Shakespeare or the Greek classics or the Rite of Spring is unique and rewarding in distinct ways.

Beautiful.

Reminds me of Mandy Patinkin (the actor), which reminds me of "Evita"--the most well-realized play I have ever seen. (I think I saw it four, maybe even five, times when it was playing here in L.A.)

[Here is the thought pattern: This is the music which was, essentially, a living "character," when, in the TV series "Criminal Minds," Mandy Patinkin's character ended his life.

Long before "Criminal Minds" made its debut on prime-time television, though, Mandy Patinkin had starred, as Che Guevara, in the musical play "Evita"--the story/tragedy of real life Argentine dictator, Eva Peron. In the musical play, the character of Che becomes the omniscient "explainer" [to the audience] of what was, behind surface reality (which was bad), really going within Eva Peron (nicknamed "Evita"), and Argentina at that time. (It was a very bad time for Argentina and for Argentines.) "Che" became the unheeded "conscience" of Eva, explaining to the audience (in music) "what" she was doing, and to an extent, "why."

I can still see Mandy Patinkin, as Che, standing at stage left, with the spotlight on him, singing "to" Eva (who was alone at center stage, entirely unaware of Che's cautions), "telling" her what was REALLY going on--to no avail, of course.

I will always associate this particular music by Bach with Mandy Patinkin and his portrayal of "Jason Gideon" in "Criminal Minds," and simultaneously, his emotionally moving portrayal of Che Guevara in "Evita."]

Yes, great, but,
Who is Mormon?
