...I am currently in NM. I did a meetup with a Catholic friend from Sandia who said he was told not to accept the wafer unless the Priest had rubber gloves on. Has anyone heard about more about this? Sounds absurd.

I've wondered that a lot in SM--especially when some cootie-bearing individual drinks out of a sacrament cup and puts it back in the tray.

...you mean, a pimply-faced adolescent has just handled, or manipulated his acne-ridden face prior to his preparing the Sacrament?..............yumm!!

..."please sir, may I have another?"

Never heard this about the wafer during flu season. I have heard for those parishes that also use wine as part of communion, the suspension of the chalice while the flue was around

Read the link. No mention of priest wearing gloves while distributing communion.

Not sure why your friend embellished that

Back at the last major flu outbreak, 10-15 years ago, the priest would not place the wafer on a person's tongue but in their hand. Also wine from the chalice was suspended for a time.

So the host and wine magically trans-combobulating into the actual body and blood of jesus doesn't kill the flu virus in the process?

Gee, who woulda thunk!

The simple thing is to deliver the wafer (or bread fragment) from one basket, and have the communicant* dip it into the wine vessel. Is this too complicated for a local ecclesiastic?

*Or Communist, if it's a "Liberation Theology" sect.
