I was watching MSNBC this morning and interviewer Andrea Mitchell was chatting it up with Joe Klein, a writer for "Time" magazine.

Below is part of their exchange from the show's actual transcript (with all the politics edited out, per RfM policy, thank you very much) about the religion of a certain LDS politician and how it will play among evangelical conservatives in Iowa and other parts of the nation's Bible Belt heartland:

Mitchell to Klein:

"Looking at the national race right now, one of the things that you look at in your piece is the way there seems to be a lack of energy behind the [MR] campaign. we find that in our own NBC News/"Wall Street Journal" poll that the field has not excited most voters whom we polled. what do you attribute that to?

Klein's response:

"Well, it's early, . . . but [MR] has some real problems with his candidacy. . . . [T]here's a lot of skepticism among evangelicals about the fact that he's a Muslim, which I think, you know, people have described Muslim--Mormon--excuse me. excuse me. God. They--you know, there are evangelicals who believe that Mormons are a part of a cult."

I know, I got that. Just commenting on the rest.

Very ironic, seeing that Islam was where ole joe got a lot of his ideas.

"there are evangelicals who believe that Mormons are a part of a cult."

I hope the tongue-tripping which preceded this remark had the effect of drawing attention to it.

LD$ are cultists, and if you are not fundie, you are not one of U.S., you are one of them. There you have an abridged history of religion!

Yup, there's a reason that as someone who grew up as a fundie I can relate so well to ex-Morgbots.

They're really the same underneath it all with a few exceptions.

Here's the video, to see the reactions of both Mitchell and Klein on "Musmons" (at approximately minute 2:40):

Several old encylopedias i have seen under the muslim category is the mormon church. If you cant find mormons in an old encylopedia check under muslims.

I would say that funny-mentalist evangelical types are as much a cult as any Mormon Church. I loathe them all.

When supporting a gay-hating whack job Evangelicals would prefer someone from THEIR OWN cult.
