I was watching MSNBC this morning and interviewer Andrea Mitchell was chatting it up with Joe Klein, a writer for "Time" magazine.
Below is part of their exchange from the show's actual transcript (with all the politics edited out, per RfM policy, thank you very much) about the religion of a certain LDS politician and how it will play among evangelical conservatives in Iowa and other parts of the nation's Bible Belt heartland:
Mitchell to Klein:
"Looking at the national race right now, one of the things that you look at in your piece is the way there seems to be a lack of energy behind the [MR] campaign. we find that in our own NBC News/"Wall Street Journal" poll that the field has not excited most voters whom we polled. what do you attribute that to?
Klein's response:
"Well, it's early, . . . but [MR] has some real problems with his candidacy. . . . [T]here's a lot of skepticism among evangelicals about the fact that he's a Muslim, which I think, you know, people have described Muslim--Mormon--excuse me. excuse me. God. They--you know, there are evangelicals who believe that Mormons are a part of a cult."
