I'm curious, too. The ashes are supposed to be the ashes made by buring the previous year's palms.

Interesting. Seems it happened back in Ireland a few years back. Something about over buring the palms and mixing it with water. Makes it caustic?

Maybe with water it became strong lye?

I have to wonder why the clergy didn't have it done to themselves first. Are they exempt?

No, they are suppose to get them, too. Perhaps the congregation gets them first, then clergy?

They let the palms dry out before burning instead of burning them green. The ash had a much higher pH that way. Or there were vampires in the congregation.

Clergy have them already when they put the ash on the congregations.
