21st century medicine is amazing, at least in OZ. I hope they pull through.

A TV news story said that the nearly hospital was struggling to tend to all of the wounded in a timely fashion, since the numbers were so great. I'm sure the hospital called in all of their medical personnel. At least the people could be helped.

The guy was a calculating terrorist. He knew what he was doing and planned things out well. He did the shooting in New Zealand and not Australia because Australia is better at dealing with terrorism and has better police. He knew he had a better chance of escaping in New Zealand and he picked a place that was regarded to be safe and he also chose a city that was just getting over being destroyed by a large earthquake.

The guy wasn't a white supremacist as much as he was a terrorist who had a well calculated plan. He planned for a long time and he had weapons that are very illegal in New Zealand and Australia. Why this guy wasn't flagged by the intelligence agencies in both countries is beyond me. Shows how lousy their intelligence is. Sadly we aren't much better in the US. One problem is we retie heavily on artificial intelligence and computers that miss a lot. We don't have the human intelligence assets we need and they really aren't well trained to be that effective but we have 18 intelligence agencies we pay for.

One can be a white nationalist (that's the term he used) and a terrorist at the same time. The former is a goal, the latter the means to that end.

We're shocked because an active shooter, in a place we expect to feel safe (a house of worship) is one of the most horrific things we can imagine.

But just for purposes of context and comparison, the US Department of State, in its travel advisory, points out that Caracas is one of the most dangerous places to be in the world, with about 79 murders a day, from both crime and partisan militias. Also, dozens of people are dying because the power loss in hospitals.

There never has been a shortage of misery on the planet. There have always been pockets of hell here. We just know more about it because of mass communications and the internet.

If that shooting in New Zealand happened in the 1970's it would barely be news here. Terrorists know they can set off wide scale panic and wide scale pay back in our media saturated world. Christchurch is a pretty isolated place as is New Zealand but due to mass media it was an effective terrorist attack because it happened in the last place people expected it to happen and the media shouted it to the world and even participated in some of the hate the terrorist wanted to fan the flames of.
