My Mormon convert ggggrandmother, whose husband was a bodyguard to Joseph Smith and close friends of his Uncle John, smoked a pipe for most of her adult life.
She had twelve children and went through many hardships and many moves, often in the dead of winter as a Mormon. I think her pipe brought her much comfort. She lived to be around 90 yrs old.
Her husband didn't fare so well. His body gave out from so much persecution and moving in the dead of winter so many times over. He passed away in Illinois prior to their moving west to Utah.
