100 patients are under investigation.

Reading the comments show how people are skeptical about the accuracy of government reports. It's possible that this could be much worse here in the U.S. than reported.

RUN!

Everybody RUN!!

Okay, that was just me trying to be funny. I have no idea what's going on but I have COMPLETE faith in the governments of all the nations of the world; I know they are trying to do the right thing and I also believe that people will do what is right, let the consequence follow, battle for ...

And as noted in the NBC story 25 of those have already tested negative vs. 5 that have tested positive

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/cdc-reports-3rd-case-new-coronavirus-virus-u-s-n1123236

"So far, about 100 samples from 26 states have been sent to the CDC for testing. Five have tested positive and 25 have tested negative; the rest are pending."

>Reading the comments show how people are skeptical about the accuracy of government reports. It's possible that this could be much worse here in the U.S. than reported

That is indeed possible. It is also possible that internet commentators are overreacting and/or just conspiracy promoters.

I’ve never once gone to the hospital when I had the flu. It’s the flu. This is America. So are they selling coronavirus home testing kits at Walmart and CVS?

>I’ve never once gone to the hospital when I had the flu.

Good for you. I've seen people go to the ER in the middle of the night because they've had a rash for the past three weeks.
There are people who if they get a sniffle or a cough right now will be convinced they have the new coronavirus. They will end up getting tested.

So when the Anaheim Disneyland closes because of this flu, I'll probably start taking it seriously...

Anybody wanna put some money on whether it will happen and name a date?

That article does not at all support your subject. You claim 100 Coronavirus patients but in the first 15 seconds the news clip says "all five patients in the US. . ."

This may be a big health problem. But shouldn't we wait for actual evidence instead of exaggerating news reports by 1900%?

I was just quoting what they said and then showed on a U.S. map half way or so into the report. Take your complaint to them.

Nah, I think I'll stick with my interpretation of the report since it is verbatim accurate.

The title of the article is "Coronavirus Outbreak: 5 cases confirmed in the US so far."

Five cases.

It is better that one man be killed than a nation dwindle in infection and sickness?

Correct. While the virus is concerning, it is less deadly than the common flu.

The danger is in whether this virus decides to mutate. If it does, then we could be in serious trouble.

A pandemic is coming. Not a case of if, but when. All this crying wolf doesn't help.

Why do people keep talking about "if the virus decides to mutate"? It has already mutated. That's how people caught it. It is already infectious. It's dangerous just as it is. No mutation required.

On two occasions I have seen a story that gave a number for deaths v. number infected. And each time I divided the number of deaths by the number infected (i.e., solved the fraction, deaths over number infected) and both times the answer was .022, or 2.2%.

Meaning that if every human living today (7.5 billion) became infected, there would be 165,000,000 deaths.

Not a big deal, eh? It might open up some lanes during the morning and afternoon commutes...

Although if I were one of those to die, it would be a truly heartbreaking tragedy for the world, n'cest-ce pas?

What is the difference between Corona Virus and viral pneumonia?

Options: ReplyQuote

Corona viruses are a category of viral vectors that cause the common cold and a number of more serious illnesses like this Chinese thing, SARS, and some others.

Pneumonia is inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs, usually caused by an infection by a range of different vectors. It is thus a symptom, or a manifestation, of an underlying infection. Like the flu, the common cold, and many other illnesses, infection by the Chinese corona virus can cause pneumonia directly or by depressing the immune system such that other viruses or bacteria flourish in the lungs.

So Corona Virus (capitalized for this particular disease) is an illness that can entail pneumonia.

If you’re seeing angels, maybe. If they want money for a lap dance, probably not.

Some excerpts:

"What we can say for sure is that Wuhan will be a lot worse in China, simply because health care there is vastly inferior. It appears that, like flu, Wuhan usually kills through often treatable secondary infections. Well, treatable in the West. You’d be surprised at how many potentially deadly diseases (malaria, TB) Americans get that wreak havoc in much of the world but kill essentially none of us.

"It also appears those most likely to die of Wuhan virus fit the same profile as flu fatalities: people over 65, those with compromised immune systems and those with serious pre-existing conditions. Two of the 17 Wuhan dead were 89-year-olds with pre-existing conditions; the youngest was 48 and suffering from diabetes and a stroke...

"The media are correct in saying the closest comparison here is SARS. It also was first reported in China and was what’s called a coronavirus. But while they want you to remember SARS as akin to the Black Death with cries of “Bring out your dead!,” fact is, there was a grand total of only 8,098 cases, of whom 774 died. Then the disease simply disappeared. More than 7,000 of those cases and about 650 of the deaths occurred just in mainland China and Hong Kong. The United States had just 75 cases and zero deaths."

The poor air quality in major Chinese cities is notorious. It has to be a factor in some of these deaths. Pollution will weaken your lungs.

It's been five days now and Topper's wildly misleading subject line remains so. There are now 8 cases in the US.

Seems like most of the deaths in China are elderly males.
Oh, great. :-/

People get concerned when a new virus starts to kill people -- as this one has. They may not realize that there have been other corona viruses, and that this one will likely not be much more of a worldwide threat than those were.

My POV is that when a new, potentially deadly virus is in circulation, you keep an eye on it and count on the various governments to take reasonable precautions (as everyone has been doing.)

A couple of observations.

I am reading that this new virus may eventually become a pandemic, so perhaps another illness that arises every year and kills a significant number of people annually. If that is what happens, it would be very sad.

Also, the Chinese government certainly has not acted responsibility. It announced the existence of the disease on December 1, if I recall accurately, but recent genetic analysis seems to indicate that the virus was in the human population for weeks or months before then. Beijing appears to have repressed that news; eight doctors were reportedly jailed early in the process for discussing via Whatsapp what they thought was a resurgence of SARS. So the Chinese government was very late to publicize the problem and is probably still understating it.

If they would just let the church into China, the elders of Zion could cure these corona virus cases with a priesthood blessing. If it doesn’t work, someone was watching porn.
