Would you want to live up there? I've thought about it a lot. A nice ashram up there would be nice to visit. An LDS Temple there makes sense. Get exercise and effect in your temple "worship."
China must be a major, prize target for the LDS machine now that Europe and North America appear to offer little in the way of converts/cash flow.I doubt that many Chinese will have much awareness of the Church's problematic history and questionable theology and they perhaps have no access to Cantonese or Mandarin counter-Mormon information. Fawn Brodie, Dan Vogel or the Tanners are probably unknown in those parts which is just what the Church wants. The only problem for the Church is that the Chinese Communist Party is unlikely to allow much, if any, missionary work or allow stakes to form...
Asian countries are poor fits for an American church. Utah culture simply doesn't translate well in that area of the world. And Chinese history predates the time when mormons say Noah's flood really happened. So that won't go over well either.
Missionary: "Jesus visited America!" Chinese Person: "Who cares? Go away."
Now that the US is publicly blaming and shaming China for the virus, bilateral relations are in deep freeze for the foreseeable future. Considering China's geopolitical ambitions, we can reasonably expect a protracted cold war. China will not be a viable mormon target for a long time.
In addition, the wealthy Chinese upper class (those whose tithing the church lusts after) have been sending their children to American universities for years. Their command of English is often superior to that of the average lockdown protestor. Educated Chinese citizens will have no problems discovering the truth about TSCC.
The Mormon Church has never seriously courted the rich and famous. They always look for diamonds in the rough and preach their prosperity gospel to them like gold teeth for the temple.
