It was quite well known that when Monson, Packer were alive and driving the church. The Law Firm Kirton/Mckonkie was always going to stakes and areas where there were high profile excommunications that were to take place. I think John Dehlin proved that McKonkie lawyers went to visit his SP and Stake Ldrs at least twice prior to his excommunication. Now it seems that excommunications are being "done" away with for intellectuals, liberals and doubters. The new handbook introduced right before General Conference makes it more of a bishop, church probation type of scenario. They'll still have excommunications for murders, conmen, rapists, child molesters, etc... or will they??? don't want to directly link LDS site because the lawyers for Intellectual Reserve may be watching. Yet, Mormonstories does link it and discusses the changes.
