And if so, do they still conduct witch hunts? Or, these days, do they just get together to play cards and trade recipes?

Just an attempt at humor, Dave, referring back to when someone misread "Delete Account" as "Dave the Atheist."

Carry on.

A misreading.

If you skim quickly, Delete Account looks like Dave Atheist.

That's all.

If the SCMC is watching me,
I hope they don't like what they see!

Let's see if they're paying attention.

Does the number 000-2329-0250 mean anything to you?

I dream of having a rollicking, raucous dinner with the SCMC agent assigned my file the day after he retires and we go over some of the things he found funny regarding my career as an Exmo!

He'll ask about some of you and I'll lie my ass off as I make up stories about who got drunk and slept with who at all the conferences!!! Any requests?

Strengthening the Members Committee?

Why does everything mormon sound like a Cialis advertisement?

Surprised they don't have a Praise to the Man committee for those who have undergone treatment.

They might have a "Prayers to The Man" committee to keep Nelson alive via prayer.

I'm absolutely positive it still exists, although for the last few years I have not seen evidence of it. That evidence always comes embodied in a friend getting excommunicated by instructions coming from beyond the ward or stake. Or two or more people involved in a similar movement getting simultaneously excommunicated on the same day, even though they live far apart. The worst is what occasionally happens to some, as with what happened to Simon Southerton, where they try to humiliate or mortify you by excommunicating you for something like adultery, when your infraction was just a version of Mormon apostasy, but apostasy that caused the church a lot of publicity and grief. Also, excommunication orders coming from the Big Fifteen cannot be mitigated in any way, unlike local ones, where the stake president may call for a lesser punishment for an adulterous person who seems to have some sort of mitigating circumstance to consider.

They do a lot.

They track members, and probably ex-members, whom they dislike. Then they order local authorities to threaten, discipline, and excommunicate people. They are the brains behind the modern inquisition and responsible for sending many well-meaning Mormons over the river and to our great and spacious building.

I don't have any current written sources, but when the church tired of Kelly, Dehlin, and Waterman they sent two people who looked like the Committee (was it Ballard and Christofferson?) to meet with the local leaders just before the decisions were announced.

I believe the general impression was that they were indeed the Committee. The Wikipedia article on this topic is pretty good.

It was quite well known that when Monson, Packer were alive and driving the church. The Law Firm Kirton/Mckonkie was always going to stakes and areas where there were high profile excommunications that were to take place. I think John Dehlin proved that McKonkie lawyers went to visit his SP and Stake Ldrs at least twice prior to his excommunication. Now it seems that excommunications are being "done" away with for intellectuals, liberals and doubters. The new handbook introduced right before General Conference makes it more of a bishop, church probation type of scenario. They'll still have excommunications for murders, conmen, rapists, child molesters, etc... or will they??? don't want to directly link LDS site because the lawyers for Intellectual Reserve may be watching. Yet, Mormonstories does link it and discusses the changes. https://www.mormonstories.org/podcast/a-summary-of-todays-changes-to-the-lds-church-general-handbook-of-instructions-february-2020/
