Residents of an Austrian village will ring in the new year under a new name – Fugging – after ridicule of their signposts, especially on social media, became too much to bear.

They finally grew weary of Fucking, its current name, which some experts say dates back to the 11th century.

Minutes from a municipal council meeting published on Thursday showed that the village of about 100 people, 350km (215 miles) west of Vienna, will be named Fugging from 1 January 2021.

Increasing numbers of English-speaking tourists have made a point of stopping in to snap pictures of themselves by the signpost at the entrance to the village, sometimes striking lascivious poses for social media."

A highly charged word.

It is now so widely and commonly used that the word really is not so 'highly charged'. It's been overused to the point where there is no shock value it it's use.

If they had become Mormons they would have renamed it to Flipping.

For an English speaking town you would think a 100 years ago they would had already renamed the town.

When I lived in Berlin, at a time when we still depended on telephone books, I couldn't believe the large number of people named "Fucks" or "Fucker." There were also "Fuckerts." I think that the surname "Fucks" is a regionalism for the surname "Fuchs," which is "Fox" in English. Like Michael J. Fox. But I don't believe there is an English thing I can blame for the surname "Fucker." There's no such thing in either language as a foxer or fuchser.

Anyway, years later I was walking through the major cemetery in Frankfurt, and there was a family grave marker for a Fucker family, with all the names listed, like Uwe Fucker, Father; Gertrude (geb. Schneider) Fucker, Mother. And so forth.

I'm just hoping that these people don't immigrate to an English speaking country. Of course, here in the USA, I once knew a guy named "Fick," which is German for "Fuck," so it apparently goes both directions.

Also about going both ways, here's an increasingly well-known town in the UK, Shitterton. They have to keep the town name on a stone marker to keep it from being nicked all the time.

I'm trying to imagine mormons going through the temple for Uwe and Gertrude, trying to choke out the names. The old matrons would probably faint. Would they use "Fetcher," hoping The Lord would accept their righteous substitution?

I have actually visited Fucking, Austria. I have also been to Fuckersberg, Austria. They were stops on my beer and fucking tour, which also included stops at beer spas! So glad my husband isn't a Mormon anymore!
