As a military retiree, when I observe such selfishness, self-centeredness, and stubbornness, it really doesn't sit well at all. I bite my tongue. Also, I'm sorry that so many people find it so hard to put the needs of others ahead of their own. It's a pity that we have so many self-styled experts with no respect for true expertise.

You and me both.

ETA: I was only in the Navy for about two years, though. You definitely have more grounds to be upset.

I belong to a couple of military/vet groups and the vast majority of them are pro mask/vax. They can really get going on how many kinds of vax they have had.

Well I guess some ones got to stand for freedom, even though I disagree about masks and definitely wear mine. Stockton is the kind of guy who cares about our way of life, the individual, and answering to know one, he's the boss! Thanks to patriots (not sissies) we have freedom.

Describing you as a patriot is like calling Jeffrey Dahmer a foodie.

"answering to know one"

You can't even use the word "no" correctly. It's a two-letter word and you still managed to get it wrong.

The fact that survivors live to pass their genes along is a basic survival imperative, but sometimes circumstances mitigate against it.

An example of how this basic principle is frustrated is a 'feel good' civilization, in which "...the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind..." are sheltered to the extent that they are allowed to breed.

But eventually, the piper will be paid...

Hey, I'm not a participant, just an observer.

People who follow worldwide public health advice and get vaccinated against a virulent disease are not "sissies".

People who follow widely recommended protective mandates such as masking and distancing are not "sissies".

"Freedom" is not at risk because of vaccinations and other common-sense health precautions.

The concept of "freedom" is misapplied in the case of the pandemic.

Your "freedom" to disregard public health measures shouldn't infringe on my freedom to keep on breathing.

Guy, refusing to wear a mask during a pandemic isn't "taking a stand for 'freedom,'" it's being an idiot. And a whiny one at that.

Riiight, because when I think of people who care about freedom and the American way, I just forget my old shipmates and think of sports stars /s.

Guy, I served in the US Navy while your "patriot" buddies were staying home and jerking off to "Soldier of Fortune" articles. I still wear a mask because, despite sharing a country with ASVAB waivers like you, I still care about other people in this country and don't want COVID to spread. Meanwhile, your "boss" is throwing a tantrum over masks. Who's the weakling?

Freedom isn't an easy thing to believe in or defend, all I'm saying is that the anti masters deserve some space to practice and think what they want to believe, we need to give them the courtesy that the constitution grants them which is freedom of conscience or as would have been said 300 years ago soule liberty. If we start mandating and dictating we are no better than the petty petulant nations like n. Korea, venusuala, Cuba, mask mandates aren't constitutional. Besides the ones ordering all this mandates don't want us to freely live our lives, there's a certain kind of person who seeks to be a gov beurocrat or politician

America is the land if the free home of the 'brave' not land of the wooseies.

No we don't have to give "these" people that kind of freedom.
Imagine if it had been Ebola instead of Covid? I doubt you would defend people walking around with Ebola. When Ebola touched down in the U.S. it spread like wildfire. We also do not let people with bombing vests walk around in order to give them freedom to exercise.
John Stockton is totally wrong on this. In fact I am kind of embarrassed for him and his lack of understanding.

How does wearing a mask during a pandemic make someone a "wooseie?" How is the equivalent of "Waaah! I don't wanna!" to masking and vaccinating "bravery?" And how the fuck is "follow health measures to keep your fellow countrymen from dying" the equivalent of tyranny?

I just find you and Stockton's stance to be selfish and better suited to a two-year-old.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that "being an individual and answering to 'know' one" only applies to the approved right thinking ideas, rights and behaviors. We will toe the line on discussing race and its complexities upon society in schools, contraception for women and loving whomever of the age of consent.

So maca see John Stockton (oh noes, another JS) as a defender of freedom. I see him as a petulant two year old in an oversized body, and the reason we can’t have nice things.

Petulance is annoying enough when it comes from an actual two year old. When it comes from a nominal adult, it really frosts my <insert colorful phrase here> That’s why mask refusers on airlines are getting slapped with five digit fines, and sometimes jail time. The tolerance for petulance is wearing very thin.

Are those who break the laws against driving while intoxicated the same people who refuse to get vaccinated?

Are these two types of 'freedom fighters' comparable?

Aren't the absolutely foreseen outcomes also comparable?

Why is being required to wear shoes in a restaurant not tyranny? I’ve never seen evidence that shoes actually prevent food poisoning. Some feets want to breathe free, but are not allowed to in stores and restaurants.

Seriously, what’s the difference, other than the shoe mandate is permanent and mask mandates are temporary?

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of public health and safety laws and we don’t get to pick and choose which ones we can ignore without consequences. I see no reason why a mask requirement is any different.

You can be a triple-vaxxed Covidian preacher of the highest order, one of Governor Hochul’s greatest vaccine apostles*, but one word that might be construed to be counter to the official narrative, and you are labelled and done with, period. Imbecilic.

*New York Governor Kathy Hochul:

“We are not through this pandemic. I wished we were but I prayed a lot to God during this time and you know what - God did answer our prayers. He made the smartest men and women, the scientists, the doctors, the researchers - he made them come up with a vaccine. That is from God to us and we must say, thank you, God. Thank you. And I wear my 'vaccinated' necklace all the time to say I'm vaccinated. All of you, yes, I know you're vaccinated, you're the smart ones, but you know there's people out there who aren't listening to God and what God wants. You know who they are.

“I need you to be my apostles.”

Imbecility in Quebec [30 second CBC News clip]:

https://twitter.com/Based__UK/status/1485781825301663746?s=20

I wouldn’t be surprised if some RfMers tried to argue this as a good and necessary *health* measure.

Store escorts ensuring that the unvaxxed do not pick up a pen or a pair of socks on the way to the pharmacy is precisely the kind of absurdity the Monty Python troupe thrived on. But here we are, in real life…

Re "Imbecility in Quebec":

I note that the news clip comes from a Twitter link. It seems that the short clip has removed context from the news story, potentially giving a wrong impression of Quebec's latest COVID regulations.

Your characterization is also potentially misleading. You said: "Store escorts ensuring that the unvaxxed do not pick up a pen or a pair of socks on the way to the pharmacy is precisely the kind of absurdity the Monty Python troupe thrived on. But here we are, in real life…"

Not really.

From CTV News (Jan 24/2022):

“Quebecers will have to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter big-box stores with a surface area of more than 1,500 square metres, except for grocery stores or pharmacies.”

“The Quebec government says it put this measure in place to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant.”

**The mandate applies to shoppers entering big box stores, EXCEPT for grocery stores and pharmacies.

IF a person wants to enter a big box store to shop for items other than grocery and pharmacy, they have to show a vax pass. Simple. I'm guessing, but cannot verify at the moment, that if a shopper enters a big box store without a vax pass to ostensibly buy only groceries or pharmaceuticals, that is where the "health monitor" may come in. Because otherwise, what stops people from lying at the door in order to get in without a pass. If that were allowed then why would anybody have to show a pass? Why have a pass mandate in place at all if you're going to allow entry to people without a pass. The thing has to make some kind of sense somehow, and be logical and consistent, or it gets ridiculous.

At the moment I can't find a news source that gives more details on this story. We could be missing updates and nuances.

And the reason for this mandate, as with all others, from the news article (not included in the video clip):

“…put in place to try to limit the meteoric rise in hospitalizations related to COVID-19.”

Meteoric rise of COVID cases clogging up hospitals, similar to what is occurring as we speak in other provinces as well. Hordes of people are not usually hospitalized with "just a cold" so manifestly COVID is not "just a cold" as naysayers keep repeating. Patients are not generally placed on ventilators in ICU due to "just a cold". Hospital staff members are not usually beyond exhausted due to dealing with everlasting crowds of patients so ill with colds they need intensive care.

It's not "just a cold".

I asked this question up-thread, and have asked other people in other places, and have never gotten an answer from any of them. They don't even try to come up with a weak answer. they just ignore the question.

Why is the (permanent) requirement to wear shoes in public buildings not tyranny, but the temporary requirement to wear masks in indoor spaces tyranny?

There, Pretty simple and straightforward. Give it your best shot. There are thousands of other health and safety laws, but let's just stick with shoes for now.

As long as I have the floor, I think this is completely manufactured, fake outrage, right up there with the War on Christmas. If Dear Leader had said from the get-go that masks were important, none of this would be happening.

BTW, Australia, S Korea and Japan all have about one twentieth the number of deaths per capita as the US. The latter two are very densely populated countries, where you would think covid would spread like crazy. They believe in biology and the rules of a social contract.

Amen to all that.

The only difference is the issue became politicized which was unnecessary and caused a lot of unnecessary suffering and death (among other issues).

Notice the same people who are ragging about inflation and such are the ones who have done everything they can to hit the breaks so we couldn't make rapid and adequate progress with the pandemic.
