Currently finishing a vacation in Northern Europe with 5 days in Oslo. Going home tomorrow. The Nobel Prize Museum was fascinating. The organizations and the people, Nobel Prize winners, who lead and created them have helped millions of people, in many cases with limited funds. It struck both DW and I how much good the Mormon corporation could do with $100 billion. There is so much suffering in the world and this cult hoards money building temples for dead people. If it wants to be known as a world class organization, it has the financial means. Its focus is clearly only of accumulating yet more money and real estate.

The LDS Church isn’t a humanitarian aid organization. I’n fact Russ is getting rid of all the donation options except for the tithing category. The church used to let the donator choose where some of the money went. Now the church decides.

Also Russ says the church is about making ordinances available to anyone who wants them. The church is in the ordinance business and that gives them money to be in the real estate and other types of business.

It is what it is. The church could care less about getting a Nobel prize.

Eric is not suggesting the LDS Church wants a Nobel Prize.

The Nobels built their fortune in explosives and their provision to the combatants in the Crimean and other wars. It was blood money. Alfred endowed the prizes in part to burnish the family reputation, and in the sequel the decision yielded positive results both for the Nobels and for the world.

Eric's point is that the LDS Church could follow the Nobel example. Mormonism has a sordid history and a lousy public image. If it wanted to, the church could use its $100 billion (I think it's much more than that) in surplus wealth the same way Alfred Nobel did: to simultaneously clean up the Mormon name and contribute to a better world.

It would certainly be a better strategy than building more temples.

Tragically, there are a lot of people, both inside and outside of Mormonism, who don't believe in creating a better world for all--they only want more resources for themselves. Unfortunately, with a limited amount of resources available to humans (currently only those resources found on Earth), this kind of "me first" thinking is leaving a lot of people with a lot fewer resources even for basic survival.

Nobel was a Swede, and prizes are awarded by the Swedish Academy; the Peace prize is attributed to the Norwegians bc a separate committee selects the winner & the prize is awarded in Oslo.
