If for any reason you’ve recently been feeling complacent about global security, international relations and oh, you know, little things like the continued existence of the species, here to herald the end of all that comes Tonje Hessen Schei and Michael Rowley’s “Praying for Armageddon,” a glossy, persuasive and increasingly alarming documentary exposing the influence of the fundamentalist Christian lobby on US politics.

However, the core thesis is abundantly, horribly clear: there are a growing number of people in positions of major power in US politics and broader society who are actively working to bring about the end of the world as we know it. It does not feel fine. While the definition of a Christian fundamentalist is someone who believes every word of the bible to be literally true, this bunch only ever seem interested in Revelations — as if the Good Book is a thriller and, impatient to see whodunnit, they went immediately to its last chapter, never bothering with the mellower stuff about turning cheeks and loving neighbors.

In simpler times it was a communist under every bed.

Nothing new. People have been doing it for centuries.

Yes and no. There have been all kinds of people and groups, especially nearing the end of whatever century you want, saying that Armageddon was near. Unlike the groups profiled here, however, the vast majority of these groups did not attempt to stage a takeover of governments in order to break them to support their thesis.

I am reminded of the Left Behind series of both adult's and children's books, written (at least partially) by the late Tim LaHaye. Reading those books was like reading the scripts for some of the crime dramas and Saturday morning cartoon shows that were around during the 1970s and just as violent, if not more so.

As I keep saying: the one big factor is the Year 2000. Per common understanding, that is/was supposed to be the pivotal date in all of human history. Cleon Skousen explicitly said so in his "Thousand Years" books- and he is the key to understanding modern Mormonism. The Armageddondists correlate everything they do to that concept. They never said that Jan. 1, 2001 was a firm date, but they certainly believe that the end will come pretty close to that day. The most significant thing that happened around that time, in their eyes, was the election as POTUS of a person who was not 100% white. To them, that was the last omen necessary to inform them that they need to deploy.

At least Fundy Xtians don’t self identify as ‘Latter Day Saints’ 100 yrs after their prophecies of immanent apocalypse failed.
