"Is there anything more comforting than knowing what to fear?"--Someone Wise.

I read this yesterday and those words keep trying out different parts of my brain. I could write more but I think that phrase speaks for Mormonism as well as demonstrate what Mormonism has in common with life itself.

Agreed. It also explains much of politics, particularly the sort that results in totalitarianism--and that narrower phenomenon that relies heavily on a charismatic leader and on the scapegoating of the "other."

Whom should one fear? Ethnic minorities, foreigners, gay people, trans people, teachers, books and authors, Disney, etc. Life is so much easier when someone is there to teach you whom to fear--and whom to hate.

I'm watching a show on Netflix about chimpanzees. In their troupes I see much that is like humanity. Fear of the outside and fear of losing status are there.

One low status chimp left the territorial patrol to return to his troupe and was beaten to death by a neighboring troupe who came into his territory because he was alone.

I would like to think with our larger brains we could do better.

Unfortunately our larger brains only make it more obvious how very like the chimps we are as humankind---exceptions duly noted, the few there are.

Isn’t it marvellous ...isn’t it wonderful that the one true religion is the same one your parents believed...and their parents...isn’t it marvellous that bigotry hatred and dysfunction also tend to be what parents believed...it’s hard for me to believe that a child is born with bias and hatred ...so parents do their duty and scrub those little brains...thanks mom and dad

Seems the first fear we learn is the fear of getting in trouble with the parents and the consequences that could follow. Adapting what they believe is just survival? Go along to get along. Becomes a habit that turns into fearing losing those we fear.
